And then Deborah said this, and now I want to marry her.

    YES!

Of course, I'm not sure what we will do about our respective (respected?) husbands, nor about me living in Adelaide and you in Auckland. Maybe we will have to settle for a meeting of minds instead.

Another person conflating you and me, Danielle. Wev. I'm proud to be associated with you.

Robbery, how about putting the point in very straightforward and plain English. Not that your writing isn't just fine, but given the emotional context surrounding this, I'm just not getting the point.

If you've followed the thread here, Karen, I think you will see that most of the people here, of any gender, think that the substance of the story printed by the Dom-Post is about right, that Veitch's apology was kind of creepy, that we would like to see the matter properly tried in the courts, but that we can understand why the person who was kicked so hard that she ended up in a wheelchair while she was recovering wants to avoid publicity, and we can understand that she might have good reason for taking the money. We're also puzzled about the legal status of that settlement, and we are puzzled by how the various employment law issues will play out.

    Who is Deborah?

I am. I'm one of the props in the PAS Women's 15.

    No wonder Deborah's getting annoyed.

Damn straight I'm getting annoyed. Even so, I won't be going around pushing someone to the ground and then kicking him or her so hard that four of his or her vertabrae are cracked. And if I did do that, I wouldn't be trying to make excuses for it. I own my actions.

I meant Danielle, and apologies to both Deborah and Danielle for stuffing that up.

S'okay. I was going to post in response to some of the comments, but I found that Danielle had said what I wanted to say anyway.

Regarding that metaphor - here's something that my daughter reported to me a week or so ago. It's something that one of her school friends said.

It makes me sad when people treat me as though I'm stupid because I can't move my body properly.

She can walk, but she needs a wheel chair for school trips, and for some days when she's tired. The other kids in her class routinely pick her up, without even thinking about it, when she falls over. That happens quite a lot. Because she has difficulty controlling her body, when she's speaking in public, say at a school assembly, her body jerks about a bit, because in that situation her brain can't quite manage controlling her voice and controlling her body at the same time.

I think that's part of why I'm feeling conflicted. Too much PR speak in the apology, the 'I was tired and stressed' excuse - it doesn't feel sincere to me. I get the feeling he's sorry to have been caught, not sorry for the appalling attack in the first place.

here can never be a second chance for behaviour like this. Veitch made a choice to repeatedly kick a fellow human being and then tried to avoid a police investigation. If he is reinstated you explicitly forgive an unforgivable act.

I'm conflicted about this. I agree that his behaviour was appalling, and it should be condemned. But if we say that it's unforgivable, then we give people no chance of rehabilitation, no chance of trying to make amends, examine their behaviour, resolve to learn to do better.

At the same time, I don't want to see him on screen again - lucky I live in Adelaide. And I am so over the Veitchy-Ridgy-laddy-boys-will-be-boys culture. I don't think that the culture is causative of the violence, because we all know that domestic violence is cross-cultural - it happens in all social groups. At the same time, I can't help thinking that it gives people permission to be .... can't think of a good word here... maybe 'thugs'. I haven't got my thinking clear on this yet.

the difference between stalactites & stalagmites - c for ceiling, and g for ground

    I see your stalac__**t**__ites and stala__**g**__mites, with station__**e**__ry and station__**a**__ry. An **e**__nvelope is station**e**__ry.

And raise you with a personal bugbear, which for some reason I have never been able to get right. It's a **pie**__ce of **pie**__.

    with your fancy-schmancy Ph.D

I didn't pay much for it.* Maybe that's why I didn't get the correct truth-detector model included in the package.

*To be precise, I paid nothing, and the Australian taxpayer paid for the lot. Excellent.

  • Southerly: A Trip to Canberra with Alan Bollard,

You can't sell this to New Idea, Investigate Magazine, or as a cover story for The New Zealand Listener, because it's clearly not true.

Actually, I take that back. You can't sell it to New Idea or the Listener. Investigate? Now that's a possibility.

I can tell it's not true because of this.

We start feeling a bit musical somewhere above the Tasman Sea, and when the pilot announces that we're about to land in Canberra

Everyone knows here are no direct flights between NZ and Canberra. You have to fly to Sydney and then catch the hourly shuttle to Canberra. You can tell it's an important flight because there are no air bridges at the Sydney end. You have to walk downstairs and then across the tarmac to the plane. Just like flying from Wellington to Palmerston North.

    Brilliant work (again) Mr Haywood.
