  • Stories: Joined Up,

On my return from Terezinstadt Concentration Camp on the hour long drive back to Kafkas cnr in Prague I was huranged by the wife of an otherwise pleasant American couple to join her retirement fund, otherwise known as AMWAY.
The coward I am nodded agreeable and looked for help from the rather embaressed husband.

  • Hard News: Laying Down the Law,

All of the talk of Republicanism often seems to me to just be from an anti-Monarchy position rather than a pro-Dempcracy position.

If we are to move away from Monarchies? Why is it we must move towards a Repulic? Why not a install a Democray where all votes are truely equal and not mediated by Parties or Representatives?

Republicanism itself is also anti-Democratic like Monarchies.

To devolve power truely to the people in a true democratic model of one person, one vote on each issue.

The removal of elected representatives and the installation of power of the people. Rather than one person, one vote for a party & Representative - who have been known to move away from their platform as soon as they get the reigns of power.

Can we agree MMP is the wrong name for our electoral system?

In that the Mixed Member Proportional system it is a Mixed Party Proportional system.

The Party being a further mediating factor away from democracy and towards representation modelled on Republicanism.

The aim of Republicanism is to mediate ideas and influences of democracy into political parties and as such is anti-Democratic.

It would at least solve the problem of elected representatives and silly political parties which I'm sure no-one agrees with every point of their political party policy and so with a one person, one vote on each issue could be true to themselves without the compromises and contradictions of our current system.

    Just a thought.

Steven - God yes love it!

Kowhai - Graffiti as art even if it's not to your taste can be art. Those who may dismiss it I'm sure would see some value in the subject at least, being Sir Ed Hillary. This is at the top of Riccarton Rd on a wall of a cafe facing the railway line north.
The council here have allowed it to have a mural of graffiti art which is better than seeing tags and to some degree respected by taggers.
Tagging/graffiti art at the skate park also seem a good spot for it.

There was a kid who ran around Fendalton tagging fences and garage doors. If homes in Fedalton weren't such fortesses then there would be no tagging on their fences but thats another post for another day. He was followed and photographed by locals who shopped him to the cops. Not sure what happened from there but the tagging has been removed, as best it can.

Law makers / Councils do draw a distinction between Graffiti Art & Tagging.

I'm sure anyone can see some art in graffiti of somesort. Say Sir Eds pic on the santioned sit cnr of Riccarton Rd & the Railway track in Christchurch.

This space was set aside for graffiti art to reduce/stop tagging.

As for my neighbours whose fences were tagged it wasn't flash. A note the "red neck/conservatives" of Christchurch took a photo of the tagger. The hip Aucklander did what?

"I can go off meds for up to six months at a time but when I start not coping I can go back on them to mediate the extremes."

    Gotta be carefull there.

I did that once and forgot I shud start slow. It started with total euphoria then totally f&*ked up paranoia - & I remebered I shud had started slow. So held on tight and enjoyed the emotional ride for the next week - it wasn't boring!
