  • Field Theory: State of Disbelief,

So - when introducing a kid to Star Wars, do you start with Ep I or IV? Or the Christmas special?

    The answer is IV, BTW.

My 17 month year olds' fav tunes are Octopus' Garden and Maxwell's Silver Hammer ATM, but given the chance to pull a CD from the shelf, it's always this one. He seems to enjoy the music when we play it, which surprises me no end.

  • Field Theory: Awkward in Tokyo,

If a team mate was tagged by a reanimated corpse, you HAVE take their head off. No mucking around. You owe it to New Zealand.

  • Field Theory: How you wear it,

Sorry, but moustaches are frickin nasty, and my sole Movember effort turned my face into a brown, grey and red, not to mention itchy, mess. Never again. One November spawned a monster indeed.

While I respect the right of any 80s NZ cricketer to wear one, they are not for me.

  • Hard News: Safer Communities Together,

I gave Garth a beatdown on my blog for his liberal use of find-a-quote to pad out his cycling rant.

  • Field Theory: It's really a dick-move,

Geez Tom, I was nine when we went to the world cup in 1982, and I was probably the most excited 9 year old in the world. Our whole family got up to see NZ's games, plus Italy, Brazil, France and the dasterdly West Germans play in one of the best World Cups ever, and made me a football fan for life.

I think NZ needs more Football mad nine year olds - while I respect your right to say 'bah humbug', I disagree, sir.

  • Field Theory: Wait for it...,

Russell, NZ Rugby or Cricket crowds are never, ever allowed to chant, as they have 'Why does love do this to me' or 'Pokerface' blasted at 110db anytime there's a break in play.

By the time the music stops, you can *hear* the stunned silence.

People in charge of music at matches have long forgotten that crowds of excited, engaged and drunk sports fans don't need a DJ to create atmosphere.

A pithy football beatdown there, I hadn't considered the catholic angle :)

Reminds me of one time me and a friend were watching Chelsea v Milan in the champions league on the telly in the company of 3-4 (Kiwi) rugby fans. Finished 0-0. At full time me and friend both said 'GOOD game', swiftly followed by a chorus of "WTF?s" from the Rugby guys.

Hadyn, the next thing you should do re: football is read Fever Pitch. It's great at explaining how following a team through years of shit and adversity can be all worth if for the odd moment when they score a beautiful or significant or beautifully significant goal. See:

  • Hard News: The son that got away,

In a previous job / life I got Dybvig in to voice an infomercial for a Bacon Microwave gadget (Bacon Magic? I forget). His performance was awesome, it was everything I dreamed it would be.

His books are great reading too.

  • Field Theory: Worst. Game. Ever.,

Is the All Blacks' game plan of running it from anywhere and throwing passes even the Warriors would call 'unlikely' a symptom of the NZ Rugby public's demands for entertaining Rugby?

Watching the Boks, it reminded me of us in the Grant Fox era, or - hard as fuck forward pack and a goal kicker. That's it. It's bloody boring to watch, but gets you the wins. If WE'D played like that everyone would be moaning about ten man Rugby.

Listening to our coaches after the match, they weren't too bothered about the tactics, just the execution, so I'm not expecting much that's new in the next coupla matches.

Obviously everyone wants 1. Winning and 2. Entertaining and heaps of both, please. We had it in the 2005 Lions Tour, no problem, but it seems to be hard to sustain.

@marktaslov - careful what you wish for re: overseas players.
