explains that David Bowie is cooler than you will ever be

    Like that needed any explanation*.

*Speaking for myself, I'm sure** there is someone cooler than Bowie.

** I'm lying, there is not.

And isn’t that the easiest thing to do?

You are right. Except it wasn't that easy to find a non-commercial radio playing that day and when i heard RNZ was doing it I thought hey they usually make a good fist of things.

For me the worst part was the constant laughing at their own humour, like some old uncle at a funeral making tasteless jokes about the deceased while partner and children became more and more upset.

Meanwhile the internet did so very much better.

Crime victimisation surveys are a well-established thing

They are also a highly charged political metric. Sadly too often the measure gets changed in order to make the management look better instead of trying to figure out if the actual crime rate is changing in any significant way.

    with a heap of abuse.

eh I thought folks expressed their disappointment that the tribute was not the one they were hoping for.

Even if the DJs wanted to offer less played tracks I found their tone of mixed jocularity and "fuck what the punters want" to be less than pleasant.

Can't say it made me feel better on a day of sadness.

  • Hard News: Bowie,

We were having a discussion at work about why David Bowie's death is quite such a big deal. I don't know that we came up with any insight.

I think part of it is that Bowie spanned so many decades and in each he was so original, so every generation has had a unique Bowie that is their own to remember. From each unique starting point many of us have then explored the other Bowies.

I also think part of it for me is that he brought out the best in others. Collaboration is such a tricky beast and very often is seems to be dominated by one or the other. But with Bowie it seemed like when he collaborated he lifted whomever it was to a new level, finding a way to mesh with and enhance rather than dominate.

I think another part of it is the obvious respect he garnered from his peers.

I'm not sure for myself why his death has struck such an emotional chord in me, but it has.

    social media

Because it's times like these we really are social.

Bowie was special, so many of his works took you straight back to the time you first heard or saw them. So many of his songs were so very new and very powerful that they marked a moment in time.

His death means there won't be any new Bowie moments.

You guys have forgotten your chemistry papers - you did actually go to the lectures didn't you?

Not all Fe complexes are magnetic, hence your magnet failed.

Moz did indeed highlight the fact that while Auckland ain't perfect it could be managed a LOT worse. that said I'd still like to see the number of managers paid over $150k reduced somewhat.

A long time ago when Hard News was a weekly radio rant, the second most foul-mouthed edition ever*

Is that because like many of us, the public (free) library was where you got to read. The ability to walk to the library after school each day and get another pile of books FOR FREE played a huge part in growing up.

I can't even guess what life would have been like without all those books.
