I feel old.
I honestly don't remember my mates as a teenager being so utterly horrible to women. As I write that i feel like I'm shouting "In my day..."
But really I don't remember abuse of women being so pervasive particularly by young men. I DO remember old (you know like 35) men being abusive to women, particularly in the workplace but not teenagers.
I really just don't understand what has changed, or if it hasn't changed how the hell I missed seeing it when I was a teenager.
Whatever it is we HAVE to do something about it.
Part of that change has to come from the very top where we simply cannot afford to have leaders in our communities from the PM to the likes of Paul Henry and Mike Hosking, abuse women and get away with it.
Why the hell do half of our population have to put up with this shit.

courtesy of the current regime’s policies.
Courtesy of the Key tax cuts, and the subsequent cutting of spending in order to be able to afford those tax cuts.

I’m sorry if you see this as ‘whining’ Bart
I actually said the non-Auckland areas SHOULD get more per capita. Almost everything you've just described comes from not doing that.
I don't mind you complaining about the lack of support you get. What I hate is the idea that any time Auckland gets some support it's an excuse to have a bash at Auckland and then complain about how Auckland gets all the support.
BTW the movement of AgResearch from Invermay was an internal AgResearch decision, driven mostly because maintaining multiple research sites is freaking expensive and funding has been steadily declining in real dollars terms for the last 20 years.

I don’t necessarily think that is a bad thing for the sake of the economy. NZ’s public debt is relatively constrained so makes sense from a macro perspective.
NZ hasn’t had a great experience with public debt. It can be worthwhile but it can also be badly managed and end up being a dead weight on the economy.
It only really works if you can be sure the asset will generate enough value to pay off the debt and generate further gains beyond just debt servicing.

Interesting point. I think it is starting to dawn around here that there aren’t many levers left to pull.
Unless you actually believe in the data and invest in research. R&D spending by governments appears to be the one thing that consistantly sustains growth - but it's slow - hardly the kind of thing that gets votes next election.

The point is, as Russell noted, Auckland gets less per capita than the rest of NZ.
Which is absolutely as it should be, it always costs more to put infrastructure in low population areas but it is necessary, hence you get that per capita differential.
But every single time Auckland gets funding for something some numpty from below the Bombays will trot out some drivel that amounts to
"waaah waaah waaah Auckland gets all the money and we want our fair share"
completely ignoring the fact they already get their fair share. And note I didn't say "more than their fair share" because I actually believe the rural areas will always need more support than Auckland. I just have no patience for the whining and will treat it with the contempt it deserves.

I prefer "pull the government's head out of the ... er ... sand"

at the expense of the rest of the country, ODT political editor Dene Mackenzie writes
Population of Otago 215000
Population of Auckland 1400000Of course Otago should get the same money as Auckland

Hard News: Radio being made, in reply to
it is all an evolving process
It does seem that way. It doesn't feel like Campbell's chatty bits are there to compete with anything, rather they are his natural mode coming out.
Personally I don't mind it, providing there is time for the hard data when data is needed.

Hooked the laptop up to the screen and had the radio with pictures playing while the BBQ heated up and we had a cider on the deck (tough life I know).
The big advantage over the TV news is that RNZ assumes you don't have a picture to look at, so if you're tending the BBQ or chopping veges for dinner and are looking at the knife rather than the TV you still get a complete story.
And then you have the added bonus of a talented news team as opposed to an entertainment team - that difference is marked.
