Hard News: The Boom Crash, in reply to
And @Sofie: Oh good God don’t.
I was speaking from an Auckland pov. Don't have earthquakes yet. Insurance screws you one way or another. The Council can too. Rates in the thousands and climbing for small sections with ever decreasing amenities doesn't feel like value. As I said the family home will remain so and it's value to us is that it's family not money value. But yes it's still worth something so Insurance wins again. Plus, don't go digging for oil , if you found that ,it would belong to the state. ;)

Hard News: Garbage in, garbage out, in reply to
If, for example, someone set up a new newspaper, TV news venture, or some other form of news, would the general population not support it to the same level as the existing mainstream media?
It would seem no. New Zealanders earned the name Sheeple a long time ago. Now it seems to have come to pass. Nicky Hager's book, "Dirty Politics" is a perfect example of how futile his hard work became once the Government took steps to suppress the truth. What you get on PAS is not an average persons interest. They seem to like Slater scum or so the figures are supposed to be (although debatable I'm sure) RB is one of the few people asking questions. The truth doesn't come with winning lots of bling. That market has just got bigger on TVNZ. The Herald doesn't even have NZ proof readers, How can anyone come up with a new or fresh venture when the numbers don't add up? It's all about profit margins. I wish it weren't so but there it is and here we are trying to figure out why nonsense gets more attention.
Interestingly tonight an Ebola threat in Parliament followed one at the Herald. I guess someone is trying to make a point and it has got to this stage now. Someone has had enough and does not want to put up with it any more. -

Going to object via the official process, just for the fun of it.
It's not a bad idea at all. My Dad did that once in Remuera. He objected to it's increase in value for the sake of increase in rates. He had it's value decreased and to this day his rates have not climbed like ours has in 3 Kings. People are now more so asset rich ,cash poor and the rates will climb unless you are lucky enough to know the McMansion you paid top dollar for 5 years ago is now worth less. As long as you plan to stay, Council value, shmell you. Even if you sell, the market will put you back in the bracket of all those who didn't object. So, not a bad idea to object methinks.

It may actually make sense for us to cash up and leave Auckland when the time comes.
This is an almost reality for us give or take a couple of weeks. I can't tell you enough how good it feels. From a small bit of dirt/mortgage with high rates to several hectares of dirt commanding less rates and no mortgage. Free water , free power, (albeit a small set up fee) ,warmer weather. Free TV, free views, peace and quiet and a great sound system we can blast to our ears and hearts content. All this and it comes with friendly neighbours who after special coffees to discuss a couple of days work to finish our build, went home and came back with beers as he noticed we had run out last night and it would be a couple of weeks off for the next brew to surface. What a gem.The hangover is going great guns at the mo.....Is it Monday? :)

and (by that token) self-confessed economic vandal [just on the basis of his chosen image as “state house kid”, not his career as currency (t)ra(i)der]
INTERMISSION
With all due respect. as much as I always believed NZ was something special and Aux was pretty cosmopolitan, I'm now of the view, after seeing the News and Campbell Live tonight that our Despot tinpot PM has dragged us down to being just another Country beholden to other. We now have more information given by All Blacks than Our Despot. We now go to that man constantly without question, as we are told hungry kids are a "not so many" and Experts prepared to enter Pike River Mine are not allowed whilst a couple of potentially dangerous guys are the calling for entering a War we have no understanding of or right to interfere with. I mean ,it's all very nice to talk real estate but truly ,the Herald can do that any day of the week. Yes rates are up, and I'm getting out because Auckland to me is a surreal expense, but we are going into War and for all those who think it's just like Afganistan, it really isn't. John Key is the most dangerous man we have ever had in power. People need to be hounding the Greens NZF and Labour about the danger he is putting us all in. We have to try save our Country.
But ,hate to interrupt, as you were.... :( -

I was recently mildly shocked to discover that La-Z-Boys are something of a cult item with people around a decade younger than me.
yeah La Z says it all. That's actually just bad taste :) Didn't their parents teach them anything? That chair has got to be up there as the ugliest of ugliest for all time.

. If it’s not cool, that’s because it’s hard to stay cool as you age and slip into easy middle class prosperity. Where you used to fight the horrible establishment, now you are the establishment.
NEVER! I ’ll tell you that for nothing, you can put your wallet away! :) Prosperity, maybe but part of the establishment, be dammed.

That and on occasion, ill gotten gains…
Our Government doesn't have a problem with that. We reap what we sow. That's our fault if it's a problem because we voted to let these bastards continue.. I'm not going to suggest it is only the Chinese that consider playing their cards close to their hearts . Kiwis are pretty good at dodging the taxman and the Caymans are a hiding hole for anyone. No, people will take advantage of benefiting from the law if they can use the system. Hell, my uncle pays very little tax and it's legitimately . A good accountant can do that for anyone here. Really , if we continue on a path to be global, we have many Countries to educate us on good town planning. Trouble is, Key Team think they know best and we will continue to build for profit .Good social conscience be dammed

I’d live there in a flash if I could – great old houses…
Some old places are being bowled for moderrn. But really ,it's still the same Remuera . The only ones to get in is money and the ones that want to is Chinese. They want the schools . The Chinese have a longer plan than developers. What's important to them is the bigger picture. Over here they can have more than 1 kid. The Family is building from being repressed back home. It's not about taking over and changing Remuera ,it's about getting their kids into Ak Grammar ,Epsom Girls, Dio, St Cuths Kings, St Kents. They are planning for that when the Kid is 4. I've discussed it with them. It's all about the long term plan. That's why they succeed.
