  • Field Theory: In closing,

The slightly humdrum closing ceremony really only underlined how extraordinary Boyle's great expression to open the party had been.

Interesting. I found the opening ceremony rather boring, particularly the first half which I really disliked.

The closing was OK. Who knows why George Michael got to promote his new song, and May gives every impression of covering up for being an average guitarist by being a dick with a guitar. Some of the bands were good though.

Drove to Queenstown over the weekend and caught this sheep in mid-delivery. Thing was so calm throughout the whole process it was eating, and then when we parked up to watch looked up at us in annoyance and then trotted off. Trotted! With, as I said incredibly inaccurately, a lamb coming out its bum!

Taken with my cell phone through a dirty window over my partner going squee!

Those flyingfox (excellent name for it) and hydraulic tube cash transfer/receipt systems existed into the v.early 1970s-

Dunedin had one in Penroses until 1993 I think - my first year in Dunedin and I purchased a hat there. Was possibly the coolest thing I ever saw. The building is now a Starbucks and the tubes are housed at the Settlers Museum.

Still in use by hospitals, banks, supermarkets apparently.

This I find incomprehensible – why is it “instead”?

This annoys me. Parliament has time set aside for private members bills. The only thing that this bill is preventing happening is other private members bills. The government's agenda to fix the economy, create jobs, screw us all over etc, will go ahead unaffected in all the other time.

Chch has an opportunity to learn from Dunedin's stadium experience, which I feel is mixed (others such as Paul are more anti).

The insurance payout and the population will help make it financially more viable. Simply put, Dunedin's stadium is a large drain on not enough people.
You'd be silly to build it and not put a roof on it. Just in terms of the events it allows you to attract and guarantee quality this is worth it, but the viewing experience is much better.
It has to be properly multi-event. Rugby can't support a stadium by itself, the field needs to be used for other activities such as soccer, rugby league, concerts, and the buildings around it need to be stadium seats and facilities on one side, and something else on the other - office space, educational facilities. City council offices would make sense.
Can't be in a residential area. This promotes the multi-use - noise, lights etc, but also helps with parking - evening events in Dunedin can use all the parking around the university and polytechnic that are filled with cars during the day.
Walking distance of town - reduces transport issues, but makes attending something at the stadium part of a day's/evening's entertainment. Going from early dinner to a game to the pub/nightclub makes sense.
Size - once they get big the costs start to blow out, and the returns aren't there. The competition is Wellington and Dunedin, once you're close to that size, there's no point adding another $5,000 seats.

Dunedin got these about half right I feel - really overreached on cost and ability to pay.

Section 29 of the Marriage Act doesn't force celebrants to carry out marriages, and the NZ BORA doesn't apply to anything else - the BORA only applies to state institutions, which the church isn't, or private individuals carrying out state functions - which applies to celebrants, but only in relation to marrying people, which section 29 lets them out of.

Unless any of this changes in the future, there's no problem with clergy being forced to marry the gays that I can see.

All coaches had the right to ask for a review. If they didn’t, which they didn’t, completely fair. It was only one performance of one gymnast on one apparatus. I now cant remember which one it was sorry but they only reviewed one gymnast on one thing.Think it was dismount of the even bars,or pummel.

I don't mind having a review system. But what you'll see on replay later on is quite different than what you'll leave live, under time pressure. Many sports don't allow this sort of thing, or limit it to recognise this fact - it's not fair on competitors, but it's equally unfair on all of them.

When one competitor is competing against another, a review system should look at both them under the same conditions to try and ensure that the method of judging doesn't affect the outcome.

  • Capture: Cinema Scoped,

That would be about the time I was starting my life in China. I certainly don’t remember a Rialto when I lived in Dunedin. Where is it? That doorway looks both impressive and a little familiar.

Moray place, about 20 metres west of Princes Street. Used to be Empire De Luxe, and then St James I think, some history here: http://www.reocities.com/hollywood/makeup/6421/NZcinemasstjamesdunedin.htm.

  • Capture: Cinema Scoped,

I’m curious about the Dunedin cinemas, particularly the Rialto. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t there when I lived in Dunedin.

Rialto was extensively redone inside and reopened... maybe 10 or 12 years ago? It's now 6 screens inside, and mixes up blockbusters (4 screens) and film festival (2 screens with about 50 seats in each) types of movie. Some of the original interior has been retained in it's original form. Great big seats with lots of leg room as well.
