But mostly, I’m about the principle on this question. You want to lock me up? Prove I’m a criminal.
How does that work in an inquisitorial system rather than adversarial Graeme? If you can be forced to take the stand as a defendant, would you be likely to still be able to refuse to answer questions?
And if you're not allowed to answer questions, are the consequences as you've outlined above (jury can take this into account when deciding whether you are guilty), or does it lead to a contempt of court type charge against you?

Explosives generate shockwaves. Surely?
The amount of explosives is very small (50 kg I think?) and given that it's inside the building will hardly be noticeable.
The large building falling to the ground in pieces will have a bigger impact on the environment, but I don't think it'll shake anything. It will break into smaller pieces as it collapses.

Journalism thinks it’s guarding the legacy of Woodward and Bernstein, but it’s actually hiding in Sienna Miller’s bushes, trying to get a photo up her skirt.
Has anyone yet seen Aaron Sorkin's new effort, Newsroom? I feel like I'm going to like the characters and dialogue, but every show I feel like Aaron Sorkin is shouting at me "I don't like the way the world is, so I made this TV show to make me feel better about it".

Capture: Dogs Love Cameras Too, in reply to
Mother was a blue heeler/collie. Father of the top one was probably a kelpie. You can see one of his cousins working sheep aggressively here.
Bottom one dad looked basically like him, but even shaggier!

I do wonder if google or some other institution is going to try and break this open. Currently the barrier to greater web only publishing having an impact is the publishing component - the content, editing, peer reviewing is typically done by academics for free.
A significant move by a publisher to offer to move journals or set up new journals in an easy to use system open to the world would start to put cracks in it if the academics moved to publish there, and the quality of their work was recognised there.

How fantastic to see that Luke Hurley is still going strong
If you get him to a pub he'll play requests for hours as long as the jug in front of him is kept in beer. Fun nights in the distant past.

Over the holidays I had my own unfortunate introduction to national standards. My almost seven year old niece, who has moderate downs syndrome, received her end of term school report, which was a contrast in two halves. The top half, reporting on national standards, she scored I think one out of fifty for maths, and I think two out of fifty for reading.
She can do some basic maths, and her reading is actually pretty good - she read one of her favourite books to me over the school holidays - but it's not at six year old levels in almost all criteria. As she gets older and the school work gets harder she will slip further behind national standards - 2% and 4% will be the best she ever does in reports based on national standards. This will only get worse, at present those numbers don't mean anything to her, three or four years from now, how will she feel seeing 0 on her report?
The second half of the report, with comments from her teacher and things to work on was glowing - making tremendous progress, working hard, a joy to teach, achieving all the personal goals that had been set for her and more. I feel terrible for the teacher that had to put so much effort into a child, working with a part time teacher aide, and complete and hand over to parents a report that couldn't have made less sense to the uninformed reader.

The policeman then says: sorry mate, according to the Locking Drunks Up Act 2012, she’s coming to the station with me until morning, no matter what.
Actually I think the policeman would say, "Well now I have to arrest her, because it's domestic violence and it's police policy to always intervene in domestic violence so that the courts and victim support can be involved with both sides".

And I don’t think I was alone – there was a global sense of ‘thank fucking god’ when those early records arrived – you only need to look at the music press of the time. Quickly, music became exciting again and people started to push the boundaries.
My partner worked in Beggs Musical in Dunedin as a teenager in 1977. She ended up being the buyerfor all their music and brought some of the earliest punk to Dunedin. She sold to her friends in the music industry - Chris Knox, Martin Phillips - and her experience was the same as yours Simon - holy cow where has this been all our life?
