Hillary, isn't that what I said?... sort of...
-
One of the things that has appalled me, Hilary, recently is that businesses charge charities for their services.
The thing that appalls me is the fact that this practice is considered ethical in the current businesses model. There are plenty of other monetary avenues business can follow without slotting themselves into the finance stream of reputable charities. However, when the public is so tuned to commercial consumerism, how else can charities get themselves noticed?.
I'm sure there are plenty of businesses out there who do donate a hell of a lot of stuff for free to all kinds of beneficiaries, it's deductible. Way to get rid of surplus stock and let the hard working taxpayer take the hit whilst they bask in the glory of self richeousness.;-)

If this was a business and not a charity pulling heart strings, I'd have no problem with a 20% profit.
Since its not your comparison seems somewhat pointless.Fact is Kyle that these companies that "Maximise" your charities income are business'. They use every trick in the book to guilt you into giving to whoever gave them the contract, established charities receive more from direct donations than campaigns. A job is a job. One of the things that bothers me is that if the marketing company is not a registered charity then the Govt. grabs some of that charity money as tax and gives it to the wealthy but that is another story.

As this thread is something to do with America I thought I'd post this here. Scuze me.
The sending of "our troops" to Afghanistan has raised some interesting points, in my head at least. Phil Goff was being interviewed on te news last night and just before they cut the segment I heard a reporter ask, "Is it too dangerous for them" meaning the SAS, a point made by Mr Key the other day. Well la de friggin' da. Nothing is too dangerous for our mighty SAS, Chuck Norris would quake in his Ugg boots if confronted by our boys in Khaki. The real point though is. Why are we involved in a fight to prevent a mountainous desert region from worshiping a different God? Oh... hang on... it's the same God, just a different book. As far as I can recall the Afghanis have had an Islamic bent since time immoral (as my Mum would say) so we are plumb out of luck on that front.
Afghanistan sits smack in between Iran and Pakistan, two major Islamic states and also, if the Americans get their way, Iran would sit squarely between American Iraq and American Afghanistan. This, in my humble opinion, does not bode well for a stable situation.
I'll get my flack jacket. -
If I were to price a job, of almost any kind, as 25% wages 25% expenses/materials and 50% profit I would consider it "Skimming" So, surely an 80/20 split is not outrageous considering the "product" is just the feel good factor of giving?.
If I wanted to give $50 to a starving family in Africa and guarantee the family got 100% of my donation, I would have to fly there and give it to them in person. The airfare alone would cost...
Just a thought. -
maybe the answer is for the government to fund unions .....
LOL.

And I wasn't thrilled to see the Trillian Trust -- a gaming machine charity -- there so prominently. What exactly was its contribution?
Come now Rusty. You would be among the first to expound on their contribution to chlid poverty, surely?.

Is this just another attempt to deal with the symptom not the cause of child poverty?
