Sam Harris on That Film:
http://www.samharris.org/blog/item/on-the-freedom-to-offend-an-imaginary-god
The freedom to think out loud on certain topics, without fear of being hounded into hiding or killed, has already been lost. And the only forces on earth that can recover it are strong, secular governments that will face down charges of blasphemy with scorn. No apologies necessary.
And I did like The Onion’s cartoon (above) of Ganesha fisting Bhudda while jacking off Jesus and Moses – no deaths ensue.

Did it strike anyone else as a sort of ‘up yours, we’re still the boss’ to teachers- who were seen to have won a very public victory over class sizes?
That was my immediate reaction when I heard it this morning. The cynicism would be astonishing if it wasn’t so dispiriting.
Absolutely. And if it wasn't that act of spite, it was an even uglier cynicism: 'If they try and rally everyone to stop this too, then they'll just look like anti-change moaners who oppose everything we do and the public will stop listening to them: now's the perfect time to push this one past them.'

This nails it brilliantly.
But, you know? Surely being "unable to recall" something significant from just two years ago is, in itself, enough to make you unfit to hold public office! Is he brain damaged? He certainly sounds it, giggling through interviews ...

Speaker: How's that three strikes thing…, in reply to
This was always going to be about making a public example of one infringer as a warning to everyone else, rather than actually stopping everyone doing it.

Hard News: Last Words, in reply to
don't think we need you point out how dodgy National is this time , its more obvious than ever.
Clearly around 50% of the frikking population need someone to draw their attention to it!

i actually felt a twinge of compassion for Brash talking to Kathryn Ryan. Not because of her technique but because he seemed to be just a confused person
Ha ha. Yeah, you can't help feeling a little sorry for Don, in that he's a bit like Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey -- a polite, well spoken gentleman who's not afraid to front up, answer all questions to the best of his ability and say his piece reasonably clearly (which makes him different from the no-shows or obfuscaters) ... just what he's saying is usually complete tosh. He just always seems a little baffled and hurt that being there and saying his bit is not enough.

Thing to watch for tomorrow is Bradley Ambrose going for his declaratory judgement that the conversation was not private under the law. That would sink the whole thing.
Or launch the whole thing -- depends how you look at it! ;-)

If John Key is more interested in talking about policy than old people and ACT leadership … why didn't he talk about that with John Banks?
-
Interesting the extent to which Winston is still paraphrasing ... We demand quotes!!

Why do we allow politicians to get away with “I don’t recall” so often? I wouldn’t believe that reply from my four year old son if it happened as often.
A-fucking-men.
The other night when Banks finally admitted that, actually, he did remember what was said, then why wasn't the next question 'So you were lying when you said you didn't remember?'?
