cinema is one subset of screen content in the same way as television or internet are

Yes -- but the lines between them are almost entirely dissolved these days ...

it’s not just an issue NZ faces.
In LA they have created a ‘film Czar’ to try and stop the flow of productions being made outside LA.

LA’s “problem” is exactly what our industry is desperate to have happen, and what the increase in subsidies is trying to achieve: productions “running away” from LA … and coming here.

And one thing that’s happened with the changes in that sector is that form has changed along with format.

I think this is a very important point / concept. The feature film is the size it is cos that’s what you could have people pay to sit in a theatre and watch (x 5 sessions a day). With TV showing that there’s a market for 26 or 76 hour stories, and the web perfect for 1 or 5 or half minute pieces (or 24-hour real time train journeys) and – most importantly – cinema becoming the sole preserve of giant multi-sensory rides, then if NZ films’ home really isn’t cinemas, the 90 min format may well be the next thing to fall away.

Good to see NZ on Air taking some action on this.

Thanks for contributing, Campbell -- I think you're completely on the money (if not, as you mention, in the money) with everything you're saying.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The First Time,

My first was The Clash, at the Logan Campbell Centre in 1982 – 14 yrs old, shortly after getting First Record I Ever Bought – London Calling. And speaking of Jonathan Ganley, pics of that night by him here: http://www.pointthatthing.com/2009/03/to-faraway-town.html

There is also a live recording of the show – was on Megaupload, since gone, if you didn’t grab a copy. And, I must say, being able to hear an actual recording of the first show you ever went to: pretty awesome (copyright be damned!).

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

(still withheld, though WETA and Warners seem to have seen it)

Small note: 'WETA' is not a synonym for 'Peter Jackson's Film Production Company'. WETA Digital is a Visual FX company, WETA Workshop is a design and practical effects company ... I expect neither were involved in any of this directly. Wingnut is Jackson's film company.

alarmed by Equity’s bid to get its private casting notes to try and contest the cast of non-New Zealand actors

Oooh, I'm trying so hard not to get drawn into this again ... but this bit made my jaw drop when I saw it in the papers. For Equity to ask for written reason why every actor was not cast in a production is just ... mental.

I've waded through hundreds of auditions to cast a handful of roles, and I can tell you there are a million reasons why someone isn't cast -- the most common one being that they just aren't quite 'it'. But no way would I a) write down those reasons for every person, and b) let anyone else see those notes -- what a ghastly betrayal of trust for the actors auditioning that would be! Shame on Equity for even suggesting such a thing. But then it's clear that they were asking for that to be vexatious, not to actually find work for their members.

And, as Craig has pointed out, hypocrisy much? We -- and probably they [Equity] -- are quick to cheer when one of ours lands a gig overseas.

Heston "..from my cold, dead hands."

I prefer to remember Heston saying "Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape."

  • OnPoint: The Source,

However exactly it went down with Ira, here's what they should be called on:

When told Keith was printing a story they shut the kiosks down instantly ...

But when told about it last week by some bloke asking were they interested in knowing (or, sure, paying for that knowledge) they did nothing! Why not?

And there are 700 possible points of compromise.

Then why are they confidently telling (distressed and anxious) people on the phone that their privacy hasn't been breached? They simply have no way of knowing, right?
