they don't really have to "go public" - just talk to the police and tell the truth - shopping their team-mates if necessary - let the police check their alibis and at the end the cops can arrest people or announce that none of the team are "people of interest".

Anjum - the problem is that if things like this happen and don't get resolved for any group then that group is tarred by association - it's in their interest to come clean with the police rather than let it hang - by leaving the country like this all football players are now under a cloud (or more of a cloud) - given no other information "scumbags, potential rapists, stay well away" seems a reasonable response - especially since we can't which ones are or are not (or if they are at all) - you asked for another example - as I said above I think one could at the moment equally consider that the police might also be a group for young women to stay away from

Rape is rape the moment consent is withdrawn (or can't be given), doesn't matter whether the person is a prostitute or not - 'no' means no

rogerd: that's my point - there are two issues here:

    - is it smart to hang around in dangerous places (people)?

    - should there be places (people) that are dangerous?

No one should be treated any differently if they're assaulted in a 'good' part of town or a 'bad' part of town - it may be a stupid thing to do but when the law gets involved it has to be neutral - assault is assault. Doesn't matter if you walked into a Black Power pub by mistake or were in Bellamys (maybe those are poor choices for this example)

Craig - I understandstand where you're coming from - but have to disagree - really there are two issues here:

    - should people be carefull around football players (or whoever given their rep)?

    - should people have to be carefull in such situations?

obviously it's smart to be carefull around scumbags - but equally one shouldn't have to be carefull around scumbags

Obviously there's a class of scumbags (including, as we've found out over the past years' some police) who consider they're above the laws because, in general, they can get away with it

  • Hard News: Travelling Gravely,

seems to regularly be $70 (haven't done it for about 6 months though) - we don't get 747s, they wont fit - we occasionally have 737's that are arriving early taking sightseeing jaunts at eye level past our house (and at the moment there's some annoying army 'terrorist' exercise that seems to involve helicopters late at night going on)

The basic problem is that Dunedin built its airport (aerodrome) in Mosgiel - it's a great small plane field, but tucked in under the hills for flights coming in from the north but when the time came to make a real airport there wasn't enough space to expand - downtown isn't exactly full of runway shaped flat land and I guess no one wanted to fill in the harbour - where it ended up was probably the closest piece of available flat land

People talk about putting in a rail link or something, I suspect the number of travelers really isn't large enough - once you get on SH1 it's a fast drive though

(oh yeah and someone put our airport so far away that a cab ride is $70 normally - luckily my boss pays for it)

  • Hard News: Travelling Gravely,

I always tell them the night before I'm catching a flight and which one (but I'm going to the airport, doesn't that make it a tad obvious) but then I'm someone who just has to be there early so it's only really an issue on frosty mornings here in Dunedin.

Speaking of which I've already told Grant I wont make it on the 2nd (I'll be on a beach somewhere warm) I will be hosting a house party the previous Saturday that's likely to entertain at least one game of Werewolf (which you may have heard Russell talk about) drop me a note if you have the urge

  • Island Life: The longest last time,

One thing I've noticed that's changed when we moved back home after 20 years of OE was that suddenly we're going to many more funerals than weddings ....

The ones that are choreographed by undertakers seem often to be stilted and awkward and the few that families take and make their own have been memorable and wonderfull, tears and laughter - sending someone off by getting the assembled multitude to sing "You can't get into heaven with roller skates" (at their request) brought smiles and wonder

Arranging a funeral is not something we do that often and I'm sure it's easier to lean on someone who knows how it's done, on the other hand I can imagine that doing it yourself can be cathartic and help you work through the process

As the baby boomers start popping off they'll start replacing this one more formal institution

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

Well having owned an SUV (and early Explorer, one of the ones with the exploding tires - bought for use in the desert) I think one big problem with SUV roll over is the suspension - in the US they in at least part exist to get around the federal car petrol economy targets (they are technically a truck) - they are sprung like a truck which means when you do that quick lane change/dodge to avoid someone you can get into an evil state where the suspension bounce from the first turn adds to that from the correction so that the unwary lose control - you can't be fast and nimble in these things

well we're long overdue for an emissions test as part of a WoF - I had high hopes for this year but I guess that's not something to do during an election year. in California there was no WoF but an emissions test every year or two (depending on the vehicle's age) and 800 numbers for dobbing in those who are too smoky
