  • Hard News: #eqnz: Okay?,

There seems to be an overdue recognition that coastal shipping has/could have a vital role in transport. We get two or three freight updates /day, and they are not about new surcharges in every case. Here's Toll's latest :-

    Latest Update:

    · Inter-Island services continue to operate with restrictions remaining in place.

    · All other destinations within Islands have been serviced as normal, except that delays remain completing deliveries in the Wellington region. The Wellington team have committed to working the weekend to clear the existing backlog of freight.

    · We have commenced discussions with a number of customers regarding the warehousing capacity we have in Christchurch. Our customers are considering this as a way to ease any transit issues the transport industry may experience in the lead up to Christmas as volumes build and congestion may become an issue.

    · Services into and out of Christchurch are being maintained, with some capacity restrictions.

    Blenheim

We have commenced in full our road bridging and tranship facility in the existing Blenheim branch facility, additional people have joined the team, and we have agreed site works with Kiwirail to extend our siding and footprint on the Kiwirail site.

With additional resources now in place we will be in a position to commence 24/7 operations and transport services from today.

    Inter-Island Line - Cook Strait

The Aratere ferry remains berthed in Wellington pending clearance of the Wellington rail span, at this stage the indications are the Aratere could be out of service for 2-3 weeks, we will update this given the impact on our Interisland services as soon as we know more or receive any updates.

    Lewis Pass

Lewes Pass still remains our preferred route, however we are experiencing congestion, and this journey is now taking us up to 7.5 hours one-way, bridges are down to single lane with a 10km an hour restriction.

    Coastal Services

We have continued our partnership with Pacifica and increased our volumes on coastal services and will utilise 3 Pacifica services over the weekend from Auckland into Christchurch.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem, in reply to Joe Wylie,

It wasn't quite so obvious back when the big three were the NZ Listener under Holcroft ; NZ Truth ; and the Auckland Weekly; when every small town , local village even, had a local rag which was the most boring of the available newspapers.
But now the Listener is the dietary advice /agony aunt. So now it is nearly all just circus and entertainment at one level , and propaganda at another level.
Your observation is "right on the money".

I can see political science PhD students writing their theses on this election.

the world-view they acquire via enculturation.

A juvenile propensity towards imitation of adult behaviours ; some educational philosophies try to encourage this behaviour in order to develop more competencies . . .drawing out potentials perhaps.

    he appeared to be adlibbing

I only know Trump from Doonesbury cartoons of a decade or so ago, but I gather that he sells himself well. It's not easy for an insincere person to ad lib because he has to think what to say ; it's easier to ad lib when you're speaking from the heart.
He wouldn't be a bad salesman.

Sorry. It’s a meme that is abroad in regard to the role of media in influencing elections. Apologies if it was out of place here.
It was just my interpretation of media commentary in the last few weeks of the campaign. It was my perception that Hilary had been thrown under the bus, and it was a Murdoch publication which appeared to have changed horses . We discussed it at home at the time , and having looked up the odds, were enthusiastic about the potential.
There was no intention to offend.

  • Hard News: The fake news problem,

Dear Russell, sorry to hear that you missed my “memo” ; late October I think it was.
The actual circumstances remain tolerably “unclear”. Nobody seems to know what happened in the end . But it does seem that Hilary may have been running to catch a bus.
Still, as the saying goes – “it’s an ill wind . . . ” (wink, wink).
The odds offered by Jetbet on a Trump win certainly were stupendous just prior to my “memo” ; trust you got your share.
    Best
    Rupert

    an observer

The quantum physicists say that pure status will be difficult to achieve , and there is still uncertainty.Total immersion while maintaining self-awareness may be a useful strategy ; possibly the best that we can do.
    Sounds easy enough :-)
