  • Speaker: Talking past each other:…, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

We don’t get to be either all the time so maybe agreeing to disagree could dampen the animosity.

Thanks Sofie. I'd settle for people simply being able to disagree without it going to character. That reliably becomes the opposite of discussion.

Here is a link to the lecture at Victoria University last week “Is there an appetite for a sugar tax in NZ?”

    Woot! An on-topic comment!

    Thanks Hilary :-)

  • Speaker: Talking past each other:…, in reply to Carol Stewart,

    I agree, Bart.

Yes, I'm sorry Carol. I have had this feedback. Obviously, it would be silly to even try and have a "don't talk about PA outside PA rule", but the element of bad faith in talking smack about individuals grieves me.

I did invite suggestions the last time a thread melted down like this, but they were so contradictory it was hard to know what to do.

I do ask that people show respect for each other and assume each other's good faith. It's hard to have something like this work without that basis.

Anyway, what a lovely bit of writing

Thank you! It was doubtless indulgent, but all credit to Murray for letting me have adventures with writing.

but just pollutes the discussion for everyone else. And often in a derailing way. Fuxake people, pick a venue and have it out, then leave it there.

    That would be good.

    That was nice.

    Thank you.

Yay. That's so nice to hear.

Do feel free to post what you like of that story if you change your mind. We're all about stories.

The most notable of these threads was Graeme’s on ‘roast busters’ and free speech.

That was three years ago, after 394 comments. I didn't agree with Graeme's perspective, but it's hardly a "pattern developing". Threads do occasionally need to end..

And I would debate your "women versus men" framing in this case. A scan of the thread would indicate a range of views on either "side". But I can't tell anyone how to see things. I would like a rest though.

  • Speaker: Talking past each other:…, in reply to Deborah,

I think it would be silencing to close it down permanently. Taking the evening off seems like a reasonable option, but closing it down altogether does seem, well, as though it’s not permissible to have a conversation about fatness and fat people.

All good. I would be grateful if it got back to being a discussion.

  • Speaker: Talking past each other:…, in reply to giovanni tiso,

There is a pattern developing of women saying things here and men feeling oppressed and wanting to close threads that… but hey it’s not my forum you all do what you like. Food for thought though maybe.

I presume "men" refers to me – in which case you should probably have said so. I'm not feeling "oppressed", but it does start to feel a bit pointless when it gets like this.

I'm somewhat aware that I'm being slagged on Twitter, again, but I'm trying not to look. I've tried hard with this thread and I've especially endeavoured to operate in good faith. The only time I've closed a thread in recent memory was when a discussion had gone completely toxic and abusive. It took a toll on me and I'd rather not go there again.
