  • Hard News: Christchurch: Is "quite good"…, in reply to Tom Semmens,

And you seem to believe people made submissions they didn’t really mean.

No, I am saying that delivering the desires they expressed might require a bit more brain power than a simple literal translation.

“Translation”? I can’t understand this is in any other way than you think Chch people are lying about what we want. Or are too stupid to know.

Of course not every suggestion will turn out to be feasible. But you don’t seem to think the public submissions are worth anything. What other public discussion did you have in mind?

not enough people here to make fixed lines pay

    yet

To re-iterate Emma's point from earlier, rail would make sense if it went to the satellite suburbs/townships like Rangiora and Rolleston. But as cities go, Chch is relatively compact. As Hebe says, $750M would buy you a lot of buses and bikes.

The women's gymnastics? The age requirement is now 16, not 14 as previously. The women are women, not girls.

If people want to get up in arms about private use of the park why don’t we get angrier about the CCC continually bailing out the golf course in North Hagley?

Cycling through the Park would be much less exciting without that frisson of danger! :-)

You have a point, of course. Although the golf course doesn't fence off part of the park the way the Oval would.

The idea should be to integrate people into a friendly, scaled urban landscape, not treat them as occasional interlopers into a foreign city’s downtown where they can marvel at the monumental works of Ozymandias before returning to their mundane suburban existence.

You seem to be talking about Auckland.

And you seem to believe people made submissions they didn't really mean. Given the effort required in making a submission, and how many Chch people I know who are really passionate about creating a vibrant central city, I think that's really patronising.

Wondering how many people in Share an Idea advocated for a covered stadium or Hagley Oval.

Yeah. Would be good to see a more detailed summary of the main themes.

  • Up Front: The Up-Front Guides: The…, in reply to Stewart,

“marriage” is just the bit where you sign the piece of paper. The rest is a “wedding”. Churches do weddings.

    Loving this succinct precis.

I have a family friend who got married in a hurry for reasons of convenience to the woman he was happily unmarried to. He arranged the licence and turned up in his best (and only) suit to the registry office and all was smiles until the official said, “Now, if you have the ring…”

He’d forgotten a ring was expected. Neither he nor his bride cared, and decades later, after joyously raising a whole tribe of rugrats, they are still ringless.

I think people can put too much emphasis on the ritual and the trappings.

Whatever makes you happy, eh? Marriage and other committed relationships come in so many varieties. And I look forward to gay weddings bringing a little more diversity and creativity to the traditional rituals.
