    Nice one Geoff! Fascinating subject.

    My memories of being a young person in Chch are of all the cinemas ringing the Square, with lights blazing in their enormous and rather grand foyers. Going to the movies was a proper night out, worth dressing up for. People arrived early, and stood around chatting excitedly, and finding their friends among the crowd.

    Seeing a movie was a social event, and very different to watching the 10" black-and-white TV at home!

    I like the very sociable feel of some of these smaller cinemas you've photographed.

    A tram system is best if it’s designed into the city right from the start, and ChCh has a unique opportunity to do that. It’s worth considering the pros and cons.

    The difficulty is the cost. I've heard estimates as high as $1.8B. I agree it would be great (provided it was a proper network and not a tourist toy), but I don't think there's sufficient will to try and raise that kind of money.

    As Sacha said, bus lanes on the main routes would reserve the space for other forms of public transport in the future.

    A very large number of born&bred Chchch people are NOT returning to the place.
    For very good reasons. Especially because of the known city hierarchical culture*, and the perception that the place has been taken over

    I respect the right of anyone to choose to leave, for any reason. But there are a lot of people, like me, who are staying to fight for the Chch we want to have.

    I just can’t believe these sports administrator guys; have any of their audience estimates ever been accurate?

    I suspect that any Dunedin resident could explain exactly what's wrong with buying a huge new stadium. Not to rain on any parades here, but has anyone done the costings of how the proposed Chch stadium would break even?

    - 80% of people need to be physically at work for genuine reasons, like it’s a shop/engineering works/hospital/bar
    - 15% of people could work from home, but no NZ boss trusts people they can’t see sat at a desk
    - 4% work in software for companies that have embraced the ‘agile’ fad and require all their staff on site for regular f****n standup meetings
    - the other 1% are very fortunate indeed. Or unemployed.

    What's your source here, Rich? I know plenty of people who work wholly or partially from home. And some NZ bosses do indeed trust their employees.

    It's not just your city, Keir. And I think Sacha has made some very constructive suggestions about the city plan. Perhaps we could all have a calm and reasoned conversation?

    Trains and trams are easier to electrify. Electric vehicles also accelerate faster – so for instance, electrifying the Auckland rail network will allow more frequent services soon.

    We had battery-powered electric buses here in Chch -- our central-city shuttles were all electric. I have to say, rapid acceleration was not their forte, but perhaps technology has improved. Perhaps you're talking about trolley buses?

    Buses are economical

    until fuel prices treble.

    Trains need fuel too. And I’m not sure how economical trains are if they stop often. Most people getting around Chch are going relatively short distances. And you want stops to be reasonably close together for ease of use.

    Imagine it over time being mainly vacant green space, then some apartments, playground, and commercial buildings scattered along the southern strip.

    OK. It's just hard to square that with what Key's been saying. (why am I trying?)
