  • Capture: Two Tales of a City, in reply to Gudrun Gisela,

Politicians either national or regional are ignoring the dilemma of the eastern suburbs.

    So true.

I feel so lucky to be in a liveable house; but that bone-shaking goat-track from Sumner through to Ferrymead is driving us crazy.

I like the general gist of of the plan very much.

Like you, Hebe, I'm not keen on having the convention centre on the square: the problem with the square as it was pre-quake, was that the locals didn't go there: it was a tourist ghetto. Let's not make that mistake again!

I think the park frame is lovely, as long as there are good connections with the suburbs: we need excellent public transport, biking facilities and strategially-placed parking buildings so that people can park and then get about the centre easily. Otherwise we'll re-create the situation where people would rather go to suburban malls where the parking is easier.

Love all the parkland along the river. And let's hope, as you say Hebe, that green corridor can run all the way to the estuary.

    Painful and spectacularly gory

Oh dear. Glad he's OK!! And you, of course. I think the "view from the foot of the bed" is often more traumatising than being in it.

Please do put up those photos Lilith. I have driven past almost every day, wanting to stop and touch the bulls and not making the time to do so. Yesterday or today was to have been the day; instead most of yesterday at the emergency doctor’s with my young man.

OK. :-) At this stage I'm wondering how I pressed the shutter button so many times...digital photography is all about sorting and organising! Last time Windows counted, there were over 60,000 image files on this machine.
I dimly remember my days of using film, where every time I pressed the button I knew I was spending $1. Or $2 for some slide film! Feeling the pressure to get it right with the minimum of frames, and the suspense of waiting to see if I had.

    Hope your boy's all right.

On the Two Tales thread is fine, or if you think they warrant a full post, email me. Gudrun may have some more to add also. When was that implosion again?

OK, I’m still sorting them, might flick you an email and see what you think. Implosion’s on the 5th.

A sad German couple approached me yesterday clutching a tourist map and asking how they could get to the Cathedral. “We knew it was bad,” they said, “but this is terrible , everything is closed and gone!”

If it’s any comfort, I have a fluffy coat I wear in the winter that makes me look like the Abominable Snowperson.

    Well not really. ;)

It's true no-one has yet taken a really blurry photo of me in it. ;-)

  • Capture: The Night Time Is The Right Time,

Jackson, I have a bunch of non-blurry pics of pianos, bulls, people and other things around the central city from yesterday that I'd like to share. Should I resuscitate the Two Tales thread or where do you think I should put them?

    This isn't a night-time shot, but it was hand-held at 1/2 sec.

So, yesterday I went to see the Michael Parekowhai bulls. Today's the last chance to see them here in Chch, so if you haven't already, rush down to the corner of Madras and Tuam. And the carved Steinway is upstairs across the road. It's being played all the time the exhibit is open by a rota of pianists, and the combination of sight and sound is mind-blowingly wonderful.

I have shots of this piano that aren't blurry, but this one conveys how startling the exhibit is....

it was the wind that blew it, straight through all the warm layers.

Oh Jack, Anorak Insufficiency!! This is a terrible thing.

Wonderful shots here folks. And the silo projections are great.

  • Capture: Cats Love Cameras, in reply to Hebe,

The wind sweeps over top of the cat so it is warmer – and tidier – to sit in the furrow rather than on the peak.

Plant your root veges in the mounds so they get warmth from the sun, and your cats in the furrows for extra cosiness. Companion planting!
