  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

But every time I do break my initial promises for Up Front and whine about my health, someone writes to tell me how much it's helped them and the whole thing seems humblingly worthwhile. Suck on that, Protestant Virtues.

I like the way sickness occasionally randomly has sort of benefits - like for me, it was when I got an email from a guy in Canadia telling me he was going back on his meds for bi-polar because my writings about depression had inspired him to try and help himself too. Another fringe benefit of depression is that when your meds start to kick in, you get a week of absolute amazing euphoria, like every coffee is an orgasm in your mouth, every shower is being touched by angels etc. Do you get that with Chronic Fatigue as it ebbs? Or is it just back to business as usual? Oh, and I suppose I should have started that question with a "if you don't mind me asking questions about it..."

or read some nutty uttering by Owen McShane

Now if it was Ian McShane, in full Deadwood mode, I would be much more inclined to believe him. After all, swearing makes you much more believeable. Just ask Bomber, that's how he got down with the kids.

Far be it from me to defend that waste of space Glaucoma, but I have to say that of the six people I know who are heavily into their conpsiracy theories, five have a history of heavy P use. The other just smokes heaps of pot.

Oh yeah, I just don't think that "people on drugs talk a lot of shit" is any kind of news - let alone a headline - even in the gossip pages.

Having said that, it now seems like it's not going to be an issue. Based on what I've read above, there seem to be any number of good reasons not to vote for him.

I'm not sure which I found more disconcerting - the P use or that Rachel Glucina felt the need to write a column about it linking his consumption to his belief in JFK conspiracies...

  • Hard News: Changing the News,

On a slightly related note, I just noticed that nzherald.co.nz has a whole "Sexual assualt headlines" section. That's kind of creepy, right?

Whatever the disease everyone here is trying to prevent, the cure is worse.

I'm very much in favour of decriminalising pot, but I'm actually kind of relieved that the kind of people who shoot at police officers are off the street as an end result.

  • Random Play: Fiji #3: No truth, only versions,

I have never understood why people would want to shield themselves from the country they are in by staying in a self-contained resort – but each to their own.

I am one of those people, most of the time. I go on holidays to get sunshine and to do nothing. When my friend and I went to Fiji, we mostly stayed at our resort because when we went to Nadi every step along the way we were hassled to buy things, and told not to go into certain stores because they were run by Indians, not real Fijians, and it was exhausting when all we wanted was some warm weather and cocktails. Of course even at the resort the waiters kept trying to sell us pot and the security guard started stalking me after we decided we didn't want to go out clubbing with him and his friends, but that's another story.

  • Hard News: Party central is hurting my head,

Being a sporting country, we should give him a choice.

I think we should force him to dress up in a panda costume - one without a mouth hole - and then we get our panda, AND he shuts up. Everybody wins.
