Hmmm. Yeah, OK, probably true, but aren't there a lot of goods we rich westerners buy which cause suffering elsewhere? Example: isn't oil similar? It indirectly causes wars, corruptions, environmental damage, all manner of things. It's just more useful to us as a society than cocaine, so we mostly ignore the dodgy parts. We're all complicit, we're all hypocrites, we're all corrupt. (Oh, also, the world is doomed and people suck. Happy Thursday!)
Well, it wouldn't be the first suggestion like this; "clean" diamonds are becoming quite popular, for instance. Just because the world sucks doesn't mean you can't start *somewhere*.

It would also be the kind of speculation that the more fetid corners of talkback and Kiwibog can spit up without our help. Just saying.
Which is why I didn't go there.

And is he still lying to cover up some other incident?
The way the police guy interviewed phrased the camera evidence seemed to strongly suggest the injury happened in the period between Bastareaud entering the hotel (accompanied by others) and entering his room. One can conjecture a number of unflattering scenarios which would cause him to come up with the table story, but it'd be pure speculation. I don't think anyone interviewed on Morning Report bought it, though.

He wore loud jersey's in built up areas, he was obviously dodgy.
I thought it came out that the jersey actually belonged to Victim Support, not Bain?

Dropbox is quite nifty for back-ups, too. Sure, you only get two gigs free, and it's probably not the most secure system in the world if you're worried about business secrets - but for something like your thesis, it's perfect.

I, for example, am not statistically illiterate or an idiot - I hope - yet I bought my once-yearly Lotto ticket yesterday. I mean, that's a shitload of money! The universe's most miniscule chance at it is still a bigger chance than I'd get by, like, working for 30 years at my job. (Unless I worked at Enron fifteen years ago, perhaps. Or was the corrupt dictator of a mineral-rich country. Or something.)
Which is fine - if you've got the money to spend. A lot of people don't, and buy the ticket anyway, for the exact same reason you've outlined, and with somewhat less understanding of the statistical realities. And therein lies the rub.

Further examples: one juror passed a note to his wife to say not to let go of their tickets for Stomp because it'd all be done and dusted by the Friday evening. Another said something similar to a worker at the coffee bar across the road.
At this point I'd be surprised if half Christchurch hadn't heard something to that effect. They do seem to have been a very talkative bunch.

*sigh* Well, like it or not vote catchers come with price tags and unpleasant realities attached. Sorry about that, but there you go and here we are.
Indeed. And when you find that mystical third major party which gets every policy exactly right, I will be right there.

While I'm not convinced by that article, I must admit that I heard rumours, before the verdict, that the jury had made up their minds pretty early on in the piece. It didn't sound like a greatly impartial panel - though, after all the publicity and thirteen years, I'm kind of surprised they managed to get a jury the prosecution and defence agreed on, so.

I think that's the point Hide was trying to make.
Oh, yeah, I can totally see where it came from, and it was probably a useful way of getting the message across to the target. I just wish we could move beyond that particular paradigm.
