  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks, in reply to giovanni tiso,

I'm afraid the credit goes to slave labour there.

Indeed, as this story explains. It's also large EU subsidies.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

Man I love this thread; my clutter of recipe books is near redundant now.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Bring Back Boxes,

It's been too long since I went to a gig in NZ. However, FWIW, there's been outrage here about the closure, through bankruptcy, of a well establish pub/venue, the Annandale, following years battling the local council to get a later licence. The place has hosted every other major Australian band for over two decades - and many kiwi bands too, I've seen Dimmer and Shihad there. It's hard to know precisely what happened but I'm inclined to agree the view that neighbours' complaints to a weak council and dodgy process by the council generally led to the financial failure. Fortunately, rather than being converted to apartments, which seemed inevitable, it's now been bought and, under a new mayor and council, will continue trading and with an extended licence.

If its of interest, I'll happily post links to the 6 or so venues I'd recommend for visitors to Sydney?

There’s a strange place in Aro St Welly.

Ha, I used to live next door. I loved living in Aro Valley.

My wife captured a lovely shot this morning while taking my youngest to childcare.

Thanks for posting The National clip Ben. Thanks too to publicaddress for alerting me, I picked up a couple of t-shirts with Clean covers on. Can't recall immediately who made them.

The Bats... god I'd love to see the Bats again. Oddly, I heard a couple of Bats tracks shopping in Rozelle in Sydney last weekend.

You're all thoroughly inspiring with your photos. My very very modest contribution was captured yesterday, it's a collection of leaves and flowers my kids picked up while walking.

Tony Abbott’s problem isn’t that he’s a Catholic. It’s that he’s a vindictive tit-mouse whose brain is apparently impermeable to facts or empathy.

    +2 Abbott's a Neanderthal.

But on the subject of marriage equality in Australia, isn’t it so awesome Julia Gillard’s response to last night was a big bag of “yeah whatever”? I’ll also note that when her conscience was put to the test, she went and stood next to Abbott.

Again, I entirely agree. However, we don't know how the vote would have proceeded had the Libs allowed their members a conscience vote. We do know Turnbull would have voted for marriage equality had he been allowed.

  • Speaker: Not in my name, and not in his either,

Nicely and succinctly put Colin. I long ago ceased 'practising' in any overtly Christian manner but was/am strongly influenced by a good and progressive Catholic (yes, it is possible) schooling. It shits-me-to-tears to hear/read Church leaders expropriate Christ for their own selfish and exclusive agendas. As others have noted, there are churches publicly advocating for marriage equality, in Sydney the MCC issued this statement.

Good call. Tearjerker that it is.

+1. Its interesting reading what the likes of Costello and Loach say of her passing.
