  • Hard News: Food Show 08,

Il caffè è un piacere / Se non è buono, che piacere è?

    Assolutamente.
What so impressed me about Italian coffee was the fact that it was done so quickly, with seemingly such little care - yet in reality was layered with perfectionism and a care so deep that it just wasn't noticeable on the surface.

Just made a coffee. I could see it was coming out beautifully straight away by the blobbing and tiger-striping. I'm now back to wondering why 90% of cafes can't make a cup as good as some munter like me can make at home ...

Having purchased a grinder and machine recently (not quite to the Domobar grade but still) I'm in love with the ritual and buggering-around-with that comes with the pulling of an espresso shot. The coffee version of Slow Food I suppose...

  • Hard News: Yr Enemies R Stupid,

He's either as mad as the rest of them or simply doesn't understand. Maybe he can't find it on a map......

I think that's because he's looking for it over by the Iraq-Pakistan border...

  • Southerly: A Year Ago Today,

Having just come back to work after the birth of our first baby last week, that was a very timely read - and I can't help note how different an experience it was from ours.

I too had a wife who seemed to think it wasn't really happening, until we headed off to National Womens in a storm at 4am and 3.5 hours later we had a son!
But we had our wonderful wonderful midwife - Rhonda in Grey Lynn if anyone need one - already there and appropriately friendly, bossy, professional and caring throughout. In Auckland we are lucky enough to have Birthcare to be shipped off to, and in our case I was able to haul a cot bed in the room and stay the night, so I never left Mum or bubs for more than an hour. The intensive care bit you experienced must be terrifying; we were scared enough when he slept a bit longer than we expected!

So well done for getting through all that, and happy birthday to your wee man...

  • Hard News: Misconnection,

Having flicked through that biography, I think Key needs to do a John Stewart-esque Jewish mothers line of jokes in his next few interviews...
    I'd enjoy it at least.

  • Hard News: Misconnection,

On the Godzilla tangent - finally watched Cloverfield yesterday and good lord, way to ruin a competent Godzilla-film with appalling written-by-a-US-high-school-film-class character backstories in the first half an hour.
We very nearly didn't get to the monster tearing shit up stuff...

  • Hard News: Misconnection,

I've got a bridge in San Francisco to sell you, if you're that credulous.

What are the views like? If I bundle this into an LAQC and rent it to Asian students I too can my have my own Lamborghini, yeah?
    :>

Sorry, but I really think Winston's been just a little too cute for his own good here. Don't get me wrong, the combo of semantic hair-splitting of Jesuitical proportions and feral aggression is delightful. In a snuff-movie way. But I think Lila Haere had Winston cold with two words today: "Pure sophistry." If a 100K donation towards the costs of an electoral petition in Peters' name isn't a personal donation, then nothing is. And we might as well accept that any register of pecuniary interests or campaign finance restrictions are meaningless.

I think he's being a dick about it now, for sure. And there was a million better ways to deal with it, but that doesn't change the fact for me that he could have honestly believed that Glenn hadn't donated to the party and just didn't even think about this legal fee. Everyone rushing to crucify the guy is being just as much a sophist...

  • Hard News: Misconnection,

Re Winston - this may not be a particularly popular position, but I'm kinda siding with him on this one.
I have no real problem with him saying that Glenn didn't donate to the party or himself - yes he should have gone looking at every possible angle of donation etc, but I don't think he was being horribly untruthful when he said he hadn't donated to the party.

As always he's being a bit antagonistic and bolshy about it still, which doesn't help, but the "gotcha" media and National putting it all at Helen's feet came out looking worst in my eyes. And when it comes to Winston, that's a rare thing.

  • Hard News: A Taxonomy of Poo,

I think any longitudinal analysis would show a significant qualitative deterioration in Perigo's language and the ideas he is prepared to express. Read the paper, or the press release Lyndon linked to and tell me he talked like that in early 90s.

The change from his presenting personality back in the day, to what he comes out with now is either soooooooo tongue in cheek that I'm missing it, or it must be a fairly serious mental illness surely? And I don't say that lightly or out of spite, I feel incredibly sorry for the guy...

  • Hard News: A Taxonomy of Poo,

Perigo offered criticism of a government.

Maybe Perigo did suffer a mental collapse that occured coincidentally with a change of government occuring in 1999. Or maybe Russell's party of choice obtained power and Perigo's criticism sounded less astute, more silly

Oh come on - I quite likely don't share Mr Brown's preference of party, yet I remember thinking Mr Perigo presented reasonable discussion in his roles through the 90s. Compare that to the press release above?

  • Hard News: Consumer,

the data aspect is the key to the phone. Without push email, google map/GPS, and safari the things just a pretty phone/touch.

    This.
And so few people seem to get it - I've heard a few people now say "well of course it's expensive: it's got full web browsing, Google Maps with GPS, downloadable applications etc etc" and then follow that up with "and you don't really need much data to just send emails etc"
    Ummmmmmmm...
