since she deals more in political gossip than empirical facts.

Isn't that true of all political reporting? They're reporting on the game, not the policy/outcomes...

In such circumstances, I think it's useful to have a third voice watching the watchers and, where appropriate, nerding it up with facts and figures

Absolutely - and that statement has echoes of this piece I read yesterday in the NYTimes Is John Stewart the Most Trusted Man in America?

  • Hard News: Just marketing to the base,

Ending welfare motivates people to find jobs like paying them to do nothing does not. The economy benefits when people work. And more people motivated to work means more gets done. Ending taxation aimed at providing benefits means employers have more resources to aim at employing people.

Ending welfare sees people without immediate work or the skills to be employed starve to death along with their family. There is no such thing as full employment in a economy. And more people dying in the community means societal breakdown. Ending taxation aimed at providing benefits means more taxation to attempt to handle the crime, health and business environment issues that come with said societal breakdown.

Wow, a pointless stream of appaling reasoning from a logically-questionable base is easy! I don't get why we don't all do it!
Of course I'm presuming that everything you write is a sublimely absurd joke after your little "the latest Rambo film is the best film ever" hilarity on your rantblog...

  • Hard News: A bit tacky, no?,

And I had to go over and see what Whaleoil and his commenters were saying

I did the same, just because I'd heard so much about this guy and never ventured other - having seen what they were having to do at kiwiblog I thought this would give a good insight.
    Good. Grief.

Can someone (Craig?) please point me to a right-leaning-but-non-partisan blog with solid analysis and commentary of a decent intelligence?

  • Hard News: Just marketing to the base,

Can I just confirm - the 15hr work obligation is currently in place for one partner where there is a married/defacto/etc partnership? And this is extending that policy to sole parents?
Does it also require both people in a partnership to then seek 15hrs work? Or is it just a "someone in the family has to be doing 15hrs work and we don't care if there's only one of you" type thing?

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Asked and answered. Despite his recent Berlin speech, Obama is running for POTUS not POTW.

Completely agree - but if you ARE going to comment on a significant international situation, I'd prefer you do with it with thought and understanding.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Obama's response wasn't particularly heartening either. His first statement was wishy-washy rubbish which just showed he had little clue what was going on, until 3 days later he simply matches McCain's "tough talk" on Russia...
Disappointing lack of critical thought. I suppose US politics would still always demand a "blame Russia" response though...

Having read my own post, I want to stress I'm not suggesting the "tenacious poster" has anything to do with said Spin Meister =)

So who's heard the term "reframing the debate"?

Because when discussion on a left-leaning blog is entirely dominated by the means by which the troublesome statements were technically recorded, rather than the statements themselves (and frankly all through the efforts of one tenacious poster(!)) then someone's earning their Spin Meister salary...
