Mikaere, I like your GDE measurement idea - not as a replacement for GDP but to sit alongside. Countries like Japan were energy efficiency is miles ahead would appreciate it as well...
But the profitability of green business is a good thing and a large driver of Kyoto and the entire FCCC - make it an even more profitable thing to be more efficient. Hopefully businesses can see that being efficient in resource use and long-run sustainable has actually been an underlying tenet of competitive capitalism since 19Tickety7

That’s if you haven’t already downloaded it from teh internets, put it on a flash drive and played it on your 32-inch widescreen LCD TV via your PS3.
Or made use of the excellent TVersity software and streamed it "live" over wifi straight off your puter through PS3 to TV. Take THAT flash drives...
And Bones. Meh. Have never really rated it but that episode was such a waste. Especially when Dexter right after it showed how "shadowy killer living right in your midst" could be done better. Not perfectly, but certainly better. -
I think you're right. They needed fresh talent and a plan for a fresh orientation immediately after winning three years ago.
Indeed - it feels to me like the NZ electorate needs fresh "step-change" approaches (not necessarily step-change action, but step-change views) every 2.5 terms or so. This helps explain the distinct lack of 4 term governments (Howard had "been there forever" for example).
But it must be extraordinarly difficult for a sitting Government to present those views - part complacency/part belief-in-their-own-views/part "well we've got all these policies in now, lets use them for a bit"...And it's those people that C/T (via the Hager filter) were going after with Brash - not at all fussed about the colour on the rosette, but with an itching sense that something needs to happen.

Preface this all with a large IMHO, but...
I don't believe the mood for change (of Government) would be so prevalent if Labour had stayed fresh and with an ongoing vision.
I get the feeling that they had a well-planned 2-term vision in '99 - First term to roll back the (in their opinion) over-reaching reforms of the previous Govts, Second term to implement a program of work they wanted beyond that.
They managed to put together some excellent ideas for the beginning of the Third term but for the last year or two haven't shown any kind of plan. Can't really blame them but all they're left with is "our selling point is we won't make the changes that other crowd will". Hardly inspiring. -
Holy crap. I missed the interview with Peter Low on Morning Report today.
He admits to hiring triad members for personal security ("I got money, I can do anything") then loses it ("don't make me angry!") when Sean Plunket calmly asks him "WTF?".
His interview on 3 News last night was hilarious! He threatened to "kick the bloody ass" of the reporter if he twisted his words
The guy is GREAT entertainment, I can't believe any politician has taken his rants as anything more than Little-Britain-esque sketch comedy... -
So the zombies win. Well that's just great.
We all need to watch George Romero movies to prepare us. Remember, aim for their heads.
Walking into work today over Hopetoun Bridge with the sun backlighting town, 3 helicopters hovering over town while a 4th wizzed up over a nearby building, very little traffic on the road besides some stationary concrete mixer trucks, noise-cancelling headphones on and El Manana playing felt quite a bit like a zombie film actually!

Those Your Views chumps are going to be mighty disappointed if, should National be elected, it repeals neither the RUC increases, nor the anti-smacking law (which they all voted for), nor the Civil Unions Act (now entirely normalized).
I unfortunately get the feeling they won't take the step of critical self-analysis of their earlier positions.
They'll be a "we got rid of the bastards" feeling for a while before they turn around and moan about something else - which they probably backed National on pre-election. -
