What about time management, working within budget and *ahem * quality control ?

And what would be the *ahem * quality control of a commercial radio station - ensuring that The Final Countdown is played just three times a day?

yes, but its essentially about delivery of a product with some public services possibly being better catered for by applying business principles to them.

The only business principle is profit.

Sam, you have no need to ETA: Drinnan described Jake Quinn as a lecturer; it give the impression that he is part of the academic elite that runs the country from Kelburn. Describing him correctly as a student wouldn't strike the right anti-intellectual tone.

Orchestras are expensive music machines compared with electro, folk or hip-hop ensembles, and there doesn't seem to be a substitute

I think you are forgetting something.

There was a story on Morning Report this morning that annoyed me (podcast) - some Southern mayors rejected Statistics NZ's forecast of population decline in Southland. One mayor said it was the work of someone in Wellington who can't get his sums right; better than that, the forecast was condemned for relying on population trends.

I am more than a bit irritated that the report did not ask for the views of Statistics NZ. I expect more of NatRad than this sort of anti-scientific reporting.

I am more inclined to believe Statistics NZ, with their statistics, than the mayors, with their anecdotes. I feel much the same about Geoff and Robbie's argument.

404 on your Media Studies link, Geoff. You need to take the public address part of the URL out.

Dutton would have us believe that we evolved to like the art he likes. On the paleolithic savannah we acquired our taste for landscape which, oddly enough, would not be realised until the 18th Century. Art which does not fit with his notions of evolutionary psychology does not count as art. It is a pleistocene man argument.
