  • Hard News: Everybody's Machiavelli, in reply to martinb,

the story has been a bit exhilarating compared to the berms of last week.

Mine got mowed and the buggers wouldn't do the rest of the front and sides of the house. Most disappointing. Had I known about Len I could have demanded he serve penance for the good of the Nation. ;)

Really? No news establishment, commercial or public, could have left this story alone once Slater broke it. There are angles of abuse of power, abuse of office, morality, politics, and dirty tricks conspiracy that are both entertaining and of public interest. As it is, the Herald seems largely to have left the nastiest details to Slater.

    Agreed.

His name’s Dave. I know that.

There’s a lot of Daves… might have to cull the list a bit to narrow it down?

It could even be your uncle. George Carlin explains.....

  • Hard News: Everybody's Machiavelli, in reply to Chris Waugh,

And yes, as others have pointed out, she is a player in this saga, and yes, there are legitimate questions about her motives to be asked, but I just don’t get the difference in degree of scrutiny the various players are being subject to.

I think the scrutiny is about Bevan because it is actually her story. The story has been assembled , played out and disassembled with her contributing at every point being made. One of the first comments I read that she had said was that she didn't find him that attractive except that his power was to her. I guess that would have spiked interest from the start. The images that the News channels have put forward are promiscuous to those who are of the "thou shalt not commit adultery" camp and therefore the concentration again peaks, the fact that she was naked in a public place/council building also peaks interest although I bet she's not the first person to do so. It is because she has started the ball rolling.
Len Brown has played his cards the best way he could in handling all media interest by telling his wife before the elections then fronting on TV once it was made public. His wife knew once it went public and has handled herself well also. because for them it is a private matter between themselves to resolve. I can only suspect the kids supporting their dad publicly is probably a sign of their own maturity in understanding that extra marital affairs are quite common and by publicly acknowledging their dad and continued support for him is their way of putting things to rest personally. I am continuously impressed with our youth of today and their capacity to understand the bigger picture. I've seen a fantastic example of kids confronting their parent over their indiscretion and it was one of the most mature attitudes I have seen. They know it's common.
Further back someone was interested in what left leaning types of my gender thought , I think , it was probably fun for her while it lasted, (sex actually is if you are doing it with the guy you want imo,) she was then silly enough to mention the affair but knew it would create interest, then some arseholes took advantage of her. I think she will have learnt a very valuable lesson this week. I suspect she wont be so foolish in the future. That alone makes her superior to John Banks hands down ! Jeez ain't sex a funny thang?

a distinctly nasty turn in NZ politics? It’s the true-blue arrival of the dirtiest tactics of US politics.

I thought it turned when Crosby Textor came on the scene but also thought nobody else was disturbed. Now Key has given up on his teapot antics. From now on he is actusually quite happy to expose his war room strategy.
