I know. But just reacting to that word and notion of suffering - a contentious one. Often applied to disabled people without their consent. Or mothers of same. I am just being argumentative. We are all on the same side really.

I thought that recent case of the baby with two faces was interesting. There was also another one recently of a baby born with no brain (Facebook banned the photos). Both sets of parents chose to go to full term and let the baby die naturally, so it could be seen as them being in control. They might have suffered more if that process was denied them.

  • Access: Your Relationship With Disability,

Change of topic but very much about relationship to disability. Dwarf (his self-description) actor Warwick Davis finds out what happened to a Jewish family of dwarf musicians in 1944 when they were sent to Auschwitz and encountered Mengele. Powerful. 46 minutes. Trigger warning. Real history in a time where there was a 'moral vacuum'.

In the pipeline. In the meantime there is a bit of disability-relevant discussion going on over here http://publicaddress.net/up-front/dropping-the-a-bomb/

I don't know of any in NZ but the commodification of fertility is a global industry. You can find someone somewhere to do anything.

There are parents in the Deaf community who do pre-natal testing to ensure a child who is also Deaf. Is that intentionally causing disability?

The first time I heard now Disability Rights Commissioner Paul Gibson speak - several years ago - he mentioned that he would love his future children, even if they didn't have his vision impairment. I found that quite challenging at the time.

There is some very strong opposition in some segments of the disability community to compulsory folic acid supplementation, eg in bread, as it can be interpreted as being eugenic to (growing new) people with neural tube impairments. There is also some opposition to it on racial grounds as it assumes that poor brown people don't know about good health care. However, the public health argument is that it is cheap and efficient.

    Nothing is straightforward.

And with antibiotics losing their efficacy and no new ones on the horizon - child birth, abortion and miscarriage could once again be very dangerous.

I'm going to make a sweeping assumption and say that I doubt that most of the sex-selection abortions (in which male babies are overwhelmingly favoured) are the free and autonomous choice of the mother.

This must be a decision for the mother. It is her body that is being used, she will be responsible for the child for at least the next couple of decades. And every time society has interfered with that bad things happen.

Yes I agree. I guess I am trying to say that wouldn't it be nice if all pregnancies were planned and welcomed, and society nurtured and supported all children and mothers, regardless. They aren't and we don't - and of course it is a decision for the woman to make.

I read something recently critiquing that cliche 'so long as it is healthy' from a woman having a disabled child. Here it is
