  • Hard News: Nobody wanted #EQNZ for Christmas,

All our family down there is now accounted for, all well apart from one of the kids being inconsolable. We had her and the rest of her family up after the first big one, no word yet on whether they want to get out again or not.

I don't know how the people who stay do it. Goes to show how much they love their city. I haven't been able to visit since the first quake, most of what I loved about the city was in the middle, so practically all of it is now gone. Good thing the central art gallery was built so well, that's something at least.

The idea of a content standards authority that had to comb through my ill-advised rantings and poorly concealed breaches of various court orders on Discourse fills me with a certain sort of glee. The silver lining is that they'd be so busy with me, the rest of you would probably be able to continue as you are. It's my gift to you.

  • Capture: Colour is the new black,

God, thank you so much for this. I held my critical tongue over the first Capture post, there was so much black & white, and I was left longing for colour. Black & white in the age of digital seems more like an easy way to hide your failures, than the film era demonstration of talent for capturing light & shadow. Fill me up with all your delicious colour.

  • Capture: Capture One, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Many DSLRs (certainly Canon) have levels built in, you just need to turn it on. Don't know about little point and shoot cameras, don't see why not considering they all seem to have orientation sensors anyway.

  • OnPoint: Fiscal Responsibility is the…,

Labour's GST change is stupid and incomprehensible. The new tax-free income threshold should be enough to cater for the very poor, and is much easier to sell (and is so much more workable).

  • Hard News: Vanilla Buffalo Yoghurt, in reply to Carol Stewart,

I bought a Giant Yukon in 1995 and it still goes fine.

I got the Rincon, which I guess was the next model down, in the same year. Went great until I gave it to a colleague's son a year or two ago, where I understand it's still going strong.
