Hard News: The not-so-Evil Empire, in reply to
switching to Chrome as my default browser has considerably improved matters
I just wish I could set the newly released Chrome for iOS as default browser on my iPad. Safari is such a piece of shit by comparison. Chrome everywhere is great, device sync works brilliantly well.

Last year I had a little bit of back pain and my doctor gave me diazepam (valium) and tramadol. I'll tell you what, I went from extremely unhappy to really, really, really comfortable on the sofa with just a couple of pills and a nice glass of beer.
(Beer contraindicated with the pills, but erowid said it was alright as long as you paid close attention to your breathing and didn't have much of either pills or beer.)
I wish more people could have the same sort of lovely, easy, harmless experience. And coming on the tails of extraordinary pain, well, golly.
Wish I had more, A++++ WOULD FLOAT AGAIN.

My only analysis isn't based on reading the actual budget, so take it for what it's worth:
Everything went wrong after you and I got a tax cut we didn't need at the cost of the poor. Everything from increasing the student:teacher ratio to increasing prescription charges flows on from there, and it flows via asset sales. If anything we needed an increase, we (both the merely relatively wealthier as well as the genuinely wealthy New Zealanders) should pay more because we can afford more. -
Sometimes you need to watch Total Wipeout on BBC iPlayer and when you need that you need it now.
(And then you'll learn that the UK version of Total Wipeout is 59 minutes long, compared with the 24 minute US version. And yet they do all the same sort of challenges. Which means way, way more time talking to the completely insane contestants. THEY'RE SO AWKWARD.)

Speaker: How's that three strikes thing…, in reply to
The problem with your suggestion is that when you can pick and choose the very best TV in the whole world, and watch it when you want, how you want, and where you want, TV is really fucking great.

Related/unrelated:
We spoke about Louis C.K.'s DRM-free & cheap stand-up thing during the show last night, Dylan bought it and started downloading very slowly it from Louis C.K.'s server, so he swapped over to a torrent and it was down in just a few minutes. Louis got paid, but had reduced distribution costs, and the customer got it as fast as possible, win + win = win, but I bet it would make these industrial copyright arseholes completely lose their shit.Ironic, as it only came up because we were talking about a Paramount VP who used Louis C.K. as an example of artists who fail to monetize. These people are just completely baffling.
We don't need them anymore.
Incidentally, I pay Quickflix $10/month not because I watch what they've got on offer so far but because I badly want someone to succeed in this market so I treat this as seed funding of the smallest order.
I didn't think of it that way, being incredibly disappointed with their offering I discounted the idea, but it might have been an unduly hasty decision.
For those lucky enough to have TelstraClear cable available in their area, Steam is unmetered.
Same with Orcon, and I think at least a couple of the other players.
I bought a two-pack of Portal 2 to play with the girl, the client is so dumb it wanted to download it completely separately even though both machines are on the same LAN. Weak.
Speaking of games, I'm always relieved when a game is on Steam, 'cos every other way I buy games I get treated like a complete piece of shit. It's ludicrous that illicit game downloaders have a much better experience with installation and play than I do as a "legit" customer when I buy a DVD.

But would we actually slap them?
Nope, just ridicule.

So I was scrolling through the post thinking "man all these photos suck, better not comment", then I noticed the captions. So, good work with the bad examples. :)
I'm definitely a big food snapper, and although I upload very selectively, it's not usually photos I think people will like, it's things I want to make sure I don't forget.

To be fair, usually when people bless me it is more along lines of "the power of christ compels you".

As a simple fat white boy it’s really easy to be unaware of these issues.
For instance the problem Emma related with doctors assuming any bruises on a woman are evidence of abuse, it’s incredibly obvious in hindsight, but didn’t occur to me until she said it.
But then hearing about things like Texas’ (new or perhaps just proposed?) mandatory transvaginal ultrasound for every woman who wants a termination. It seems like rape to me. Very clinical, very expensive, very well lit, but still forcing something into a woman’s vagina. It’s so obviously designed to feel like that to women as well “oh you want to do this thing we don’t want you to do? then we’re going to do the most discouraging thing we can possibly imagine”.
It’s just so completely bizarre and obvious.
I’ve never had to negotiate shit, it only seems fair that everyone should get the same privilege.
