  • Cracker: Gimme Shelter,

I thought Iggy Pop & Tool were both rather dull. Rammstein, who aren't really on my radar, where completely fucking brilliant. Got out of there quicksmart when Tool didn't catch my fancy, so maybe they picked up after I left for the boiler room.

I probably wouldn't have gone at all if it wasn't for Die Antwoord appearing, damn that was fun. Also good fun: Andrew W.K., on the way out it was just huge smiles all around. Good times.

I didn't really have to queue to get in, queued for a little while to get my booze band, but then didn't really encounter any more queues at any point. To get a glass of whatever you liked there were no waits that I ever saw, just rock up and get your cider and go. Quite liked the peaceful back hill, actually. Enjoying a couple of little ciders in the pre-rain steamy atmosphere.

Enjoyed the way in the gate "do you have any drugs?" she asks, "no", I say. But yes. Legal though, and purchased from one of the sponsors, so who knows. Also: fucking great. Hope the weird herbal stuff that's been available lately stays legal. Had some good times, and paid GST with my purchases, win-win.

I didn't have any hassle with security, just smiles, and if anything I would have liked the security to have been more strict with one key thing: those arseholes sitting on the stairs. They came through and (very politely) got the stair sitters to shift over, but of course it didn't last, and they proliferated.

Was nice to see that even the dullards that run our train network managed to sort out the service. With the next train waiting for the current train, sitting just out of the station, seeing this of course meant no one in the crowds had any stress about catching a train, the next one was already there. Much better than they managed for a recent rugby game I was at (and possibly informed by that kind of experience).

Oh, last bouquet: whoever the guys running the little pizza place near the green stage were. Apparently the boxes were muddled, so instead of a vegetarian pizza I got meat lovers, but the way they handled the cock-up was how these things should always be handled: huge apology, gracious smiles, quick replacement, free garlic bread, and someone being shouted at to sort the fucking pizza boxes out. So bloody good. Would eat again+++.

Thought it was a pretty good time, all things considered (for instance, that I wasn't super excited about any of the bands, bar perhaps some little excitement for Die Antwoord).

I had a McGillicuddy Serious Party friend who once managed to get her occupation in the electoral roll listed as Lion Tamer.

    I miss those guys.

Though then I'd probably try to scab the best selections from other people. Anyone have any fudge? Pralines?

Remind me not to invite you to the next PAS lolly scramble.

I'd be an ideal invitee, as I wouldn't grab any, so you'd get more for yourself.

Nah. It was robustly-produced art sold in a robust fashion -- although I think I missed the most frenzied period.

I liked the idea of the artists selling work they'd made that day, direct to the customer (we did pay them fees as well). I think they were very happy with it -- not least because the alternative, no one buying any, would have been much worse.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a brilliant idea, and if there'd been a piece I liked I would have grabbed one up myself. I just didn't like seeing my friends scrimmaging around snatching things off the floor is all.

And where were you, Mr Nicol? I never even saw you.

Right at the back on the left side facing the stage. In chatterer central. Standing sometimes, sitting others.

Then later on, standing looking aghast as people scrambled for art, more or less sight unseen. That's not how I like to see art treated, but people will do as they wish. Frenzy (not quite, really, but let me be hyperbolic) driven by the forced scarcity, I think, people not wanting to feel like they'd missed out. Luckily I only liked one of the panels, and only saw it outside the venue, and long after it had been snapped up, so I could just stand quietly judging my friends while the lolly scramble was underway.

(Said friends actually got what would make a fucking ace triptych, but unfortunately the panels are now split between three houses, never again to be reunited, and not nearly as nice as single pieces, IMO.)

And I honestly don't know what I'd do if I had a chance to come up with a meaningful name in another language. How do you want to present yourself (honne, as you point out) to other people? It's like picking a domain name but more serious.

I've tried to do something vaguely along these lines here, when I last updated my passport I put down my occupation as 'Hero'. Declined, oh well.

Nice post, Hayden. Looking forward to my first trip to Japan, in a couple of months. Hope we have someone nearly as cool when we all try to sort out our prepays (I've heard that sometimes it's not easy for foreigners to get them, but that may only be true for cockheaded amurricans who bluster into the store and shout at everyone, who knows).

I thought the Blend really turned a corner, after not entirely enjoying the previous couple. (Most recent one mainly because of that bloody harddrive music left repeating ad nauseum at far too loud a volume - it was fun once, but got grating quickly.)

Great venue, even the loud chatterers added energy to the room, made it a bit difficult to hear sometimes, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves, so who can blame them.

One thing about the venue - is it stitched up by DB? Heineken is really awful, so if DB haven't contracted a requirement to only serve rubbish, how about instead offering something a bit nicer from one of the locally owned breweries? I'm sure (as I tweeted) that Luke from Epic will do something for you, he has been kind enough to provide (partial) sponsorship for other small events around the city, so I know he'd be down.

It was my girlfriend's first Blend, and she really enjoyed it as well.

    Nicely done.

  • Speaker: A gloriously bad film,

It was my naked back, if it'd been my belly it'd also have been projected on my cock and balls. I think I should revisit that short, there's a lot of potential for hilarity there.
