  • Hard News: So long, and thanks for all…, in reply to Stephen Judd,

many left-leaning voters thought National was bound to win and so didn’t bother to vote.

It’s really hard to know why people didn’t vote.

Of course, and what I said was speculation. However someone here did some number crunching at the time of the last election (Keith Ng?), comparing the turnout and results for the last few elections, and the left seemed to have more MIA voters, while the National vote was basically static.

BTW I admire the way people like you and Keir have got stuck in to the party political thing. And I don’t mean to be dismissive of the challenges Labour faces. It’s just hard to believe how little traction they’ve been getting, given the abundance of material the current govt is offering! Someone’s got to be able to do this, and I hope the party can pick them.

But can we all agree that the fundamental barrier to an Ardern-led party is that she’s not standing for the leadership?

She isn’t? Oh, well that does make it rather hard then. :-)
Stuff yesterday had her as one of the frontrunners. But perhaps that was speculation.

If I remember correctly, Labour lost the last election mainly because many left-leaning voters thought National was bound to win and so didn't bother to vote.

Labour needs someone who will inspire their voters to turn up. Really, is it so hard?

She is not far enough along in experience to handle leading a main party, and potentially being Prime Minister.

As others have said, are we applying the same rules to the men? eg. Andrew Little.

I’m not blaming anyone in particular for this, but it is disappointing that only one woman seems to be in the running for the leadership.

There was a great gay rainbow over the river this afternoon, way out here in the provinces.
Well, not specifically a gay rainbow, but with its stitched patchwork and all, speaking of diversity and inclusiveness and no greater proportion of bigotry as in the main centres.

Kia ora for that, Chris. :-)

It would be nice to see a discussion about people’s capabilities for the job rather than their sexuality, gender, ethnicity, etc.

Because we have such a level playing field.

The “Ardern’s not ready yet” line seems to have a strong element of “because she’s a girl” to it.

Is there a sense of "she's too NICE"? Do we expect female politicians to be drab and humourless, before we take them seriously?

When Helen Clark was Leader of the Opposition I didn't think she'd make a good PM: she seemed too solemn, too equivocal, too unsure of herself. I remember her face on the night she won the general election, looking quite terrified.

But boy did she step up.

Is Ardern not ready yet? She’s been an MP as long as Robertson and longer than Little.

Key had very little experience. And look at him.

I think Labour should take a punt and give Jacinda Ardern the reins. She’s smart and articulate and hardworking. And as a young woman she stands out from the all the middle-aged men. She’s media-savvy (not to mention photogenic) and I think could give Mr-Relaxed-and-Smiley a real challenge. Particularly if she fronts for interviews. Key does not think well on his feet and can easily sound like an airhead.

Goff and Shearer are good and competent people who’ve failed to get any traction with the public. Russel Norman and Metiria Turei seem to keep higher profiles.
