  • Emma Hart,

I should note, for what it's worth, that this column suffers slightly from having had some difficult last-minute changes made to it because of what I am almost 100% sure has been some heavy toning-down of the Pundit column. I could be wrong, but it doesn't appear to be today what I read yesterday.

  • Megan Wegan,

I love to watch drunk dimwits on the brilliant Jersey Shore, but I think I draw the line at watching someone sell their soul. Yes, I have an old-fashioned perspective on sex-for-money. I support its legality because I think it is safer for sex workers, but that doesn't mean I don't think those workers wouldn't be better off in a different line of work.

Yeah, but you're not judging, right Ms Black?

  • Jackie Clark,

God almighty. May I be just a tad nonacademic and not at all intellectual and say that if I had been given money by most of my one night stands in my early 20's, not only would I have been richer, but I would have been happier as well, quite frankly. Cos they were shit. And in my opinion, if you're going to have meaningless sex with someone, at least make them pay first. Ahem, sorry.

Oh, but Jackie, as Emma said over on twitter on the weekend, don't you know, you were just brainwashed by the patriarchy.

Women don't want meaningless sex. We want puppies and rainbows and chocolate and poetry. To think otherwise is to not be a real woman.

Okay, this is interesting. As a righton profeminist gayboy, I support the right to sexual freedom for women. I've just been blogging on that very subject, namely the newfound arrival of 'codpiece ripper' sexed up gay historical erotic and romantic fiction written by and for straight women:

...any comments? Incidentally, the titles are there on Worldcat under "Erastes" and Alex Beecroft, for those who are interested.

On issues so foggy and fudgy,
I hate it when pants get all judgy.
    They leave me so wriggly
    And squirmy and giggly,
With nowhere to smuggle my budgie.

I also wanted to give Black a bitch-please slap for this mistresspiece of bitchy concern-trolling:

Hmm, strange that, running an establishment that incorporates a bar when you are a confessed alcoholic who told a national television audience that you were still taking it one day at a time. I'm not judging here, and all power to Corkery for kicking the booze, I just wonder if such an arrangement is asking for trouble.

Yes you are judging, bitch, and patronising alcoholics who don't have the luxury of hieing hither to a nunnery but have to live in world where alcohol exists. God, where is the Bombay Sapphire when you need it...

  • BenWilson,

I'm seriously curious whether there would be any resemblance at all between Pammy's and regular hetero brothel. Do the guys have to hang around in undies? Would they have a line up, or mingle with the guests trying to press the sale?

I expect most women have virtually no idea what I'm talking about and imagine that a brothel resembles a strip club, somewhere you can have a big party and a laugh, rather than a seedy little room with some people sitting around who are available to fuck, and really expect to do nothing more than that, and a 'madam' who is there to make you hurry the fuck up and pay or piss off, and a bunch of embarrassed looking punters desperately trying to work up courage, and on no account looking at or talking to each other.

  • Emma Hart,

Jackie: what I was thinking about was the time that I'd had a particularly bad night, was very upset, needed to feel better about myself, and so had sex with someone stupid. I'm thinking a sex worker would have been cleaner and simpler and morally much the same.

Also. Men paying women for sex = degrading to women. However, women paying men for sex = degrading to women. Wuh?

Craig Y: yeah, women have been writing and reading about gay men having sex for at least forty years. It's nice to see mainstream publishers catching on. I've also had a couple of goes at trying to get an interview with the guys who run Syzygy - a print magazine featuring pictorial stories of gay erotica, aimed at women.

Ben, the Listener article contains some description from Corkery of what she wants the venue to be like - "a six-star address [featuring] a bar, a spa and up to 28 rooms". "Every man in the establishment will be fore sale, apart from the bar staff... So even if you go to the bar, that man who is dancing with you, at your table, will be wanting to get you in the scratcher..."

So, not a 'seedy little room'. Nor is the Nevada brothel I mentioned anything like that - it really is the ranch-style "cat-house" people imagine a brothel to be.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Something else that's been niggling at me: Is it more or less "degrading to women" to pay a man for sex, or hire a discreet, well-groomed and gracious "walker" to take you to social events where it would be too humiliating (and totally FUBAR the seating chart) to show up alone?

Surely this is obvious? All women are high on a pedestal, and pretty much anything "naughty" or "icky" they do lowers them to a greater or lesser degree, and all men are base and filth, and pretty much incapable of lowering them selves at all, on account of already being in the gutter...

    Or something? :)

  • BenWilson,

What Pam wants and what she gets will be interesting to compare. By the sounds of it she's aiming to have flash workers, and they don't come cheap, nor do six-star premises. So she either anticipates a lot of custom, or to charge like a wounded bull. People who strip for crowds and people who fuck for money are not the same people, on the whole.

Because a key traditional role of women in most societies is to wash away men's sins?

$240/hour. Which is considerably less than Shady Lady charges, but I assume that's the base rate and there would be "extras".

They are at The White House, I believe, and Ren was perfectly happy in her outcall stripping days to escalate to sex for money.

    Brilliant.

Leigh also developed a taste for sex with anonymous younger men whom she picked up at Scotty's Garage, which had one petrol pump for legal reasons and up to 22 male attendants.

So... many... filthy... puns. "Fill her up?"

I can definitely think of a couple of occasions where (had I had the opportunity and the dosh) paying someone who had a degree of skill and wouldn't be in the common room next morning would have been a far better choice than the one I made.

I'll have to check that out. The way I heard it was that they were two separate businesses run next door to each other, but I could be completely wrong. Certainly their website's virtual tour makes it appear to be a regular strip club. Yes, there are rooms for 'private dances', but that will be for lap-dances, not sex. Clue: No showers or beds in the rooms. The guy at the door says it pretty clearly "No touching the pussy". The other site "Monica's" looks like a regular brothel with discreet entry, etc. And never the twain shall meet.

Will be interesting to see if Pam can set up something like that place, which sits on the top of the already existing reasonably large straight-for-men sex industry in Auckland. The strip shows could do OK but I wouldn't hold out much hope for the brothel side of things - if there was money to be made it already would be being made.
