  • Josh Addison,

Screenwriter Jeremy Slater gets it exactly right, if you ask me.

  • Keith Ng,

Keith, this isn't quite what you are looking for, but a friend just posted me a link about a new series of Transformer for Japan...

Hmmm... humanoid robot that requires the kiss of a girl to transform into a big red Dodge pickup truck. Where do you even begin to psychoanalyse this?

And that girl isn't wearing any pants, is she?

Elita One is the female Autobot commander on Cybertron trying to liberate the planet from the corrupt grip of the Decepticon guardian of Cybertron, Shockwave. Advised by Alpha Trion, she led a group of female Autobot resistance fighters including Chromia, Firestar, and Moonracer.

I stand corrected! And she doesn't even turn into a domestic appliance. I never realised that Cybertron was so liberal. I demand that they all turn into hybrid vehicles next, and generate energons from renewable sources.

  • Jeremy Andrew,

Well, on the recommendation of the PAS hive-mind, I'm taking my sprogs to see Transformers tomorrow. I'm pretty sure they'll like it - "Transformers" was one of the oldest's first words (it took us about a month to work out what he was saying though).

  • Che Tibby,

hadyn just emailed me this link.

it's to a mysterious preview that screened before some sessions of transformers, and it's causing quite a stir on the web.

i saw the preview. and kid-che says it's FREAKING AWESOME.

synopsis. bunch of people at a party. the lights go out. everyone goes up to the apartment roof with video cameras/phones etc. huge fireball lands in new york city. then something HUGE roars and punches the head off lady liberty, and it lands in the street. everyone RUNS LIKE FCK.

seemed to be entirely filmed on hand-helds. which makes it like a cross between "grown-up transformers" and "the blair-witch project".

  • Zeb A,

"Animae characteristically pushes certain themes and tropes to the fore – supernatural friends, martial mysticism, prepubescent superheroes, secret weapons, what colour the heroine’s knickers are."

Alas I must point out a glaring problem with this comment, as it is infact quite untrue. Like live action movies/series, anime has a huge depth and breadth of topic matter.
While your average joe only sees it as soft porn, theres a lot more out there than just that.

p.s. I fully expect to go to Transformers for some mindless relaxation, and to just enjoy myself with friends :)
Was definitely a Transformer fan back in my younger years, but go into it with no expectations. I do see our point of view with respects to the whole "ra ra" of it, but eh. It is just a movie about big toys.

It's a JJ Abrams move, of Lost fame. Stuff has it here:

  • Adrian Wills,

A few people have made this point here and I have to back them up just to defend this film a little...

We're talking about a movie of alien robots travelling to earth in search ofsome monumental piece of their life blood, and characters who are related because one of their distant relatives discovered it years ago but of course the government got a hold of it and covered it up... It's hardly the recipe for the next Cannes winning "Little Miss Sunshine"-esque film.

Movies like this, and this one in particular, are about putting something that you've only otherwised imagined up on the big screen. This film hadn't been made yet because CGI just hadn't got there yet but I think it looked pretty flawless in terms of mixing that which is created, with that which was real. They're about action, which this has plenty of, and most importantly this one, was about making some cars and planes (and what ever else) stand up and talk in between the battle of good vs. evil.

To expect or knock a film like this for it's script is just a waste of time. I'd love an epic blockbuster that has a script and plot that I'm generally interested in and compelled to watch but I'm not sure I can think of one that I ever have. I'm not a "fanboy" (whatever the hell that actually even means) but I loved Transformers, have been excited at the possibility of a movie and was not disappointed. And on a more personal note, although I don't expect everyone to agree, Shia LeBouf was and is a funny guy.

    But that's just my thought.

  • Jeremy Andrew,

I'm with Adrian, it was a great big-screen, no-brain, shoot-'em-up, action flick. Less gung-ho saccharine patriotism than independence day, more giant robots than the island. Both the kids enjoyed it, the 5 yr old sat more-or-less still through the whole 2+ hours, which is quite an acheivement!

  • Jeremy Andrew,

Plus Shia Lebouf - they were lucky to get him now while he's cheap - his price is bound to go up fast.
Oh, and Megan Fox is well named.
