  • Russell Brown,

How about a small retainer, say $35,000 plus WORK related expences. That way at least they would have to do some work.

Actually, almost all MPs do work hard. I'm damned if I'd do that job. And certainly not for $35k.

  • Paul Williams,

I was under the impression that the NZ Government was therefore interested in what the public had to say. Is the PM all of a sudden NOT interested in public input?

    Nicely put.

It's a bad look. First English gives rise to the do as I say, not as I do charge and now Key's punctured his charm-veneer.

As you said, for this to be scripted suggests serious misjudgment by Key.

    She's feisty.

Labour needs people like Keisha, I wonder if she's interested?. On the same node (my recognising political talent node) I have good feelings about David Shearer. He sent shivers down my spine with that Maiden Speech, there was an underlying passionate quiver in his voice.
    He ain't no stinkin' banker.

  • Kong,

I don't think it's that bad a look. It only looks bad to people who feel sympathetic to this particular piece of public input. Which means it looks bad to me, but I know a lot of people who have voiced the exact same sentiment that Key did, that people trading on celebrity to get political voice don't know what they're talking about. There's definitely a dog-whistle aspect to it, which many of us aren't tuned to hear.

Hang on a minute - people are quite justified in being skeptical of a celebrity's opinion on a topic in which that they are obviously not a recognised expert. Just the same as we should be completely dismissive of some robber-baron flown over by the Business Roundtable to lecture us on the evils of the welfare system.

The sad part is that if Greenpeace used a scientist with

Yes, they are. But Key is absolutely no more of an expert, and quite possibly less of one given how thoroughly condensed and "talking point"ed any material he gets on climate change is - especially since whatever it is he's being shown is biased toward reinforcing his current views, but the look of things.

Key is also in the position of not being the average person. He's got someone with a public profile who's attempting to engage with the political process, and he's saying "Shut up and go away, because you don't know anything." How does he know she doesn't know anything if he's telling her to shut up and go away?

If John Key were to take the time to ask any, say, middle aged male school teacher he would discover no male of his age has ever won the battle of public opinion if they are stupid enough to take on a teenage girl in a slanging match.

Quite right. Like I said further up the thread, PM slagging off citizen in public for disagreeing with his policy = bad look.

Actor has opinion on subject not directly related to acting = so what.

If I wasn't already convinced on the topic of climate change, bumper sticker arguments and a campaign fronted by actors certainly wouldn't change my opinion. Judging by Kong's comments I'm not alone.

  • ScottY,

On the subject of Key and what he should not be saying, how about this?

When asked what he thought of the call by Niuean Premier Toke Talagi for the people of Fiji to rise up against the military regime, he said:

"You can't have a good coup and a bad coup."

Key clearly has no idea what a coup is. The great Wiki God defines a coup d'état as:

the sudden deposition of a legitimate government, usually by a small group of the State Establishment — typically the military — to replace the deposed government with another, either civil or military.

How is a mass movement by the people a coup?

And I can understand why we might not officially sanction such a move - although behind the scenes it may be a different story - but why speak against it?

Maybe Key should have stuck to money-trading.

A bark of approval from me for Shay's comments over the last few pages.

How much doctors get paid is only loosely connected with facts. Engineers have done more to improve people's longevity than doctors over the last century, but they haven't done so well at the PR game.
