You should have watched the Germany v Australia game. The scoreline flattered the Australians, frankly.
There's a joke in that somewhere - how do you flatter an Australian?
Or even just: "and don't call me Frankly".
-
... high scoring games can be over in the first half, or earlier.
Also, games that are generally high scoring, such as basketball and netball, can be pretty boring. Being easy to score doesn't make the game more interesting.
A moment of Smeltz brilliance on the break? It's the only way I can see us getting something,
Close, PD. Smeltz sure made an important contribution to the goal.

... though perhaps someone could explain to me how this is our first FIFA points - what happened in 1982?).
It's their first points in the World Cup tournament tables - as in: 3 pts for a win, 1 for a draw. In '82 we didn't win or draw a single game, and so earned no points.
(ETA, after getting to the finals tournament, that is. We earned points to get there in our region.)

Thanks, Steve

There was a vile piece in the Press, Letters on Monday from an ex-pat SA about the Vuvuzelas.
It's up there with Bag Pipes, you hate them or you've got them.

Woot!
Anyhoo, the ball was clearly perfected in 1970, and has gone downhill ever since. Make for TV as it may be, it's perfect. Just to get the comment for the next article out of the way. 8]

3410,

I agree. Also, your dad probably says that the ball was perfected in 1950. :)

That was possible the most dramatic game of the Cup so far & say what you like about football, full credit to the All Whites for playing with real grit and determination. That one goal was bloody amazing.
-
The only thing better than this result was my pick of 1-1 with a piece of Smeltz brilliance! No, honestly this was a huge result for the All Whites, our first ever point in a World Cup finals, the third time we've beaten a team ranked dozens of points above us in the last 6 months, and you only have to look at the shell shocked faces of the Slovakians at the end to realise the incredulity of this result.
For people complaining about the state of play you're crazy, Herbert had one chance for a result in this game and that was slow it to a dirge and pray for a miracle coming out of nowhere, that's why he partnered Vicelich with Elliot and boy oh boy he did a job for us. Likewise, the subs late on, we were still in the game and he could've gutsed out and left things as they were or take a bit of a chance, he played positive.
Were we lucky? Hell yeh but I just think you can't take anything away from this team or the coaching staff for a superb job done. We played to our strengths and we now have our first ever WC point, we're joint top of Group F(!), so well done to the boys.
And whichever scout found Winston Reid tucked away outside Copenhagen, give the guy a bloody medal!

Very, very pleased. My 8 yr old showed remarkably precocious football nous by sleeping through the first half, but I'm glad he woke up for the second. Couple of nervous moments from Lochhead and Paston early on, but other than that great poise in defence. Maybe you would have wished the AWs to throw a little more caution to the wind in the last twenty minutes - Elliot certainly seemed to think so on the park. But you can't fault the result. "Keep it close enough that a goal at the end will suffice" was probably the best tactic. And great goal, that was no fluke.

Although, Paul Thompson, "Perhaps even the greatest moment in New Zealand sport full stop"? No, not by a long shot. There are a few olympians who deserve that particular accolade. And what about the All Blacks winnning the inaugural rugby world cup? Why can't it be a sport that NZ is good at that produces our greatest moments? Ludicrous argument.
-
Australasia 1 - Slovakia 1
Our Australian friends show some wry humour.
-
A great win for Denmark!
-
I fear Thompson, in his excitement, has lost a wee bit of perspective. A fantastic result for NZ football, but the guy has no sense of history if he’s serious about his “greatest moment ever?” question. You can’t discard 100-plus years of sporting achievement (covering a variety of codes) quite so nonchalantly and still expect to be taken seriously as a credible journo/blogger. Let’s just celebrate it for what it is, a superb feat, our first ever World Cup point, and accept that only time will provide us with a genuine perspective on where it sits in the wider scheme of things.

I'm just not enough of a fan to overlook the tedious gameplay or the pesky kazoos. As an aspie they drive me spare.
+1. I find the noise genuinely unpleasant, and what football I've watched, I've done with the volume way down.
The buzz also drowns out any ebb and flow of the sound of the crowd itself. It's vile.

Thank you for those pdf TVNZ7 & TVOne schedules. Much easier to read.
Funny how a lot of people (one in this thread, no less) are talking about last night's "All White victory".
I was just preparing for sleep at the 92nd minute last night, when BAM, nothing like a joyous adrenaline rush to push back the possibility of sleep by another hour.

.
I know someone looking to import a whole load of these for the RWC next year...

I don't find the noise endearing, but it does have a certain warmth to it... makes the games feel a little more exotic than the scorelines thus far would suggest. According to some of the reports coming out of South Africa, it's quite cool when you're in the ground itself.
If anyone was wondering what note the horn is, it's a B flat. Below the middle C.
But this is all by-the-by given today's result. A great day for the underdog.
-
can I just say, ever so quietly...
SMASHED EM BRO.
eee, it's a glorious day and no mistake.

I wouldn't mind it if it sounded like a bunch of horns, with distinctive blowing and not blowing bits. But it doesn't, it sounds like a continuous drone, like flies in your ear or something.

Success!

Scotland must never host the World Cup.
-
I wasn't at home last night so MySky'd the game to watch this morning.
I thought it wouldn't be too hard to keep the result out of my eyeline until 9am but didn't reckon with this excellent piece of graffiti on Wallace St. Must have been done in a fit of late night enthusiasm and, fittingly, sits beside the famous "Walk in Silence" Ian Curtis graffiti.
I hope no one ever paints over it.
