just an early twenties person walking into one of the many traps for younger players. No written contract provided either Russell.

Never mind they'll get them somewhere else

Joe Bennett's take on it all

Interesting that it - like Graham's piece - includes a reference to Mr Dotcom's head on a plate. Satirical synchronism. Spooky.

Yes, I noted that John the B synchronicity too, in the Waikato Times. Like the "Peeyem".

  • Steve Barnes,

TV show spurns Kiwi crew for Americans

Mr Bollinger said that with relaxed immigration rules on foreign workers, three key crew roles that New Zealanders could have filled would be undertaken by imported American workers.

I think that sums it up.

ACC has been asked to reassess the bill in line with what Dexter says upthread, not disingenuousness just an early twenties person walking into one of the many traps for younger players. No written contract provided either Russell.

That's shabby, but it's not a result of the law change. I hope ACC sees sense.

Most of those NZ actors and crews taken on for the Hobbit have now finished and are back on the job market, so would be available for such work. What ongoing work will be available from the estimated $12,000 government subsidy per worker?

  • martinb,

This story of LA with it's wan characters and sepia photos is a pale version of the vivid journies and fascinating people you used to write about.

    wowee.

I thought this was an article by a writer of escapism and subtle commentary through alternative culture and travel??

My two cents is that 'Sharkey' and 'JohnKey' sound similar enough for there to be an inquiry. They might be cousins.

And so long as the govt does not cut culture funding or further screw the distribution system

Well, the amount NZFC can give local productions is much less than it used to be, distribution is screwed (or at least massively in flux) … and the filmmaking landscape is changing dramatically. None of this is John key’s fault – or Peter Jackson’s – but how and where we see ‘our culture’ on screens is definitely changing. Certainly the definition of a New Zealand Film Industry is.

I think 'free' distribution (i.e. Internets) and cheap(er) production could mean exciting times ahead ... But the hundreds of people who've entered the 'industry' over the last 10 years may not all want to be part of that. And growing wages and secure employment may not feature too heavily either.

There's also telly, music, dance, visual arts and other funded culture. Sport even, perhaps?

Even in America, Silicon Valley and Hollywood are on a collision course worthy of an Aaron Sorkin script. President Obama has a tricky balancing act since they've both backed him heavily.

You bet and film is becoming a bit player making the odd cameo appearance in a wide range of "nz culture" on screen. Yes I agree with Sacha even sport as a big screen entertainment event is reflecting part of our culture or at least our national psyche , like it or not.

Kinda begs the question what do we mean by culture, such a loaded word .
It used to mean cultivation of the human being through education art etc
Post modern anthropology seems to define it as the human capacity to represent and classify human experience and to act creatively.
