Ian Dalziel, in reply to
…they even opened comments on an ongoing court trial story
They’ve taken the comments off that story now – perhaps the comment I sent questioning their wisdom gave them pause for thought?
-
I notice the caption under the Herald photo of a person leaping off the bonnet of a car, has changed from "A teenaged driver leaps from the roof of his drowned car" to "A passenger returns from a crashed vehicle after retrieving belongings through its sunroof".
I guess they eventually got around to reading the photographer's copy, rather than just making shit up.

the poor dears battle with language usage as well
I noticed this lineHis body lay on the road for several hours as police underwent investigations.
in this Rio story
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/olympics/82849884/rio-olympics-2016-russian-diplomat-tackles-kills-robber-near-olympic-park
They definitely needed an 'undertook' type of undertaking or a 'carried out' there...
..I'm sure it was unpleasant for the police - but that's their job isn't it? -
linger, in reply to
The most charitable interpretation is that somebody decided it'd be premature involving any undertakers before the police investigation was complete :-/
Or are they saying the police were in some way responsible for the body being there? (NB there are at least two senses in which that last sentence can be read without breaking any libel laws.)

New English
you’re fired!
They’re obviously getting a better ‘calibre’ of journalist covering the Olympics, as Stuff reports:A bullet was at a press conference room at the equestrian centre landing inside the building, a New Zealand Olympic spokesperson said, and the shot was fired about the same time an explosion was heard near an Olympic cycling venue
from:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/olympics/81912309/rio-olympics-while-you-were-sleeping..
Unless it s code for ‘pinhead’?Meanwhile rookie mistakes can still be found in their political opinion pieces:
Under the privileges of Parliament, they have certain powers to illicit answers from Ministers that cannot be dodged without consequences.
see;
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/opinion/82853889/stacey-kirk-parties-to-war-over-chinese-trade-can-the-opposition-glance-a-blow
it certainly elicited a groan from me…
…or perhaps they were trying to make a broader point about National ministers’ ‘illicit answers’ – at times it does seem like they are forbidden to deal with the truth.PS: this story drew to a close with an unfortunate and clumsy boxing or shooting analogy, which also contained some, er. contautology* of English?
It’s what the Government knew and when – of which many Ministers and officials are still contortioning around – that will produce the body shot.
*okay, okay I made that word up …

Because shapeshifting reptilians have multiple lives, like cats? For those who follow the signs, the truth occasionally oozes through.

John Oliver does Journalism…
I guess we already have HONC and STONC!*
*Herald On-line News Content and Stuff On-line News Content
though STUFF may actually be Social Transmission of Unremittingly Fluffy Facts -
a tale of two stories – more a paste rather than a reliable source!!
Both The Herald and Stuff are running the same story about ‘azodicarbonamide’ with the same headline:
The yoga-mat chemical’s quiet fast-food exit
- only Stuff acknowledges a primary source – it says its from the Washington Post – but a search there reveals no such story!
Further searching reveals Bloomberg– to be the original source – and the author Deena Shanker has worked for them since April this year.Virtually all other web uses of this fresh story either credits or links to Bloomberg why would Stuff just drop a Washington Post credit in there?*
(actually some other news aggregators already link to the Stuff story so that just spreads the confusion!)Is Bloomberg paid for reuse?
Personally I think any ‘credit’ for source on any stories picked up should be a weblink to source which a) verifies and b) possibly adds more detail that may have been omitted – but hat’s just me I guess…
*Perhaps Stuff are confusing the source for this ‘Food Babe’ story from last year at The Washington Post ?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2015/04/22/the-food-babe-says-shes-won-a-victory-over-kraft-the-science-babe-says-shes-ruining-mac-and-cheese/?tid=a_inl -
The Daily Blog has an interesting article about international story sharing...
http://thedailyblog.co.nz/2016/08/08/a-cough-cough-very-unique-view-of-the-saudi-sheep-bribe/
The publication said the officials at Waituhi Kuratau Trust (WKT), specializing in dairy and meat production, had some 20 years breeding large numbers of Friesian sheep which were designed to help them breed quickly, resulting in producing more than 600 heads, but the experience proved these sheep cannot live in the atmosphere of New Zealand.
I'm trying to picture a 600 headed sheep....

interesting that they turned comments off after an hour! Also worth noting that an early NZ broadband competitor, Woosh, ceased existing last month.

After recent news about the Terry Teo remake, another NZ drama goes to a tv broadcaster's on-demand digital platform rather than on-air.
-
If I say very, very loudly that I will boycott any and every product whose advertisement is forced upon me via that awful auto play videovader thing that both stuffed and the other one insert obnoxiously into any article that can charitably called readable....do you think they'll stop it?
Extremely unsettling when they invade a Radio New Zealand video piece...wtf?

Just another Stuff Up.

"Possessive... is that like a noun or something? Best to play safe and bung in an apostrophe and an S anyway, eh!"
Incidentally, that Herald story covers Sky's injunction to stop Fairfax using Olympic footage under existing fair use provisions. Sky lost.
However the judge banned Stuff's auto-playing of clips which effectively produced a continuous Olympics highlights reel. Fair call.
He failed to mention that Stuff's auto-playlists, especially the ones with zero relevance to the story you're reading, are one of the most annoying things about the site and should be permanently banned on the grounds of bad taste alone.

TVNZ honcho is (too?) relaxed about digital disruption. Article also discusses public funding of investigative journalism.

Another classic Stuff-up – their featured homepage story at the moment. -

I note the Sunday Star Times headline writers have not yet mastered the simple 'copy and paste' technique!
It is Eva Prowse not Prouse!
How hard can it be for Sunday Star Times (Escape Section) sub-editors and headline writers to copy and paste?
Rather than insultingly misspell the surname of someone you have gone out of your way to spend 15 minutes with and ask their opinion.
It's not as if the headline writer couldn't see two other correct spellings right there in front of them.I guess they have more important things to do....

Further to the earlier discussion about Stuff's random approach to comments, this seems a very strange choice:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/83536051/tramper-missing-presumed-dead-on-routeburn-track
It's as if they no longer care about any distinction between uninformed opinions and actual news. Sure, everyone can have a reckon about the All Blacks or the government, but an ongoing investigation into a death? Why? At best it's pointless, at worst ... well, you can see the problems without me spelling them out in a public forum. Terrible judgement.
