  • Jolisa,

You know, as much as I love rofflenui, I'm really reluctant to support it as the Word of the Year, simply because - according to Google - it's never been used outside of PA System.

So is it the Public Address "Word of the Year," or the Public Address Word -- of the Year?

It would be cool to hatch a word, give it a press release, and send it off into the wild, eh?

  • Heather W.,

    Sorry.

Got the brackets wrong on the Ironic Times link. Meant to click preview but it posted instead.

Just for reference, link should have been www.ironictimes.com

I reckon. "Is that somewhere near Wankernui?" replied one wag.

  • Sam F,

One could always go the 'starkish' route and offer prizes to journalists for using the term...

  • Joe Wylie,

My failed attempt to coin a phrase was 'Tinkerblogger', defined as the author of a blog who believes that by writing about something with great frequency or conviction they will cause it to be true.
See The Standard's coverage of the NZ election or (much funnier) NoMinister on the US campaign.

Thank you Danyl. From now on I'll think of them as tinkerblogs.

  • giovanni tiso,

And with all that, I still think Henry should have got the boot. I definitely got over it - it's not as if I cared that much in the first place - but on that count I don't think that Rattue is wrong.

I call that sort of thing auto-cranial-proctology but for some reason that term's never caught on either.

  • Islander,

    Two comments:

"Amy" Brooke used to be known as Agnes-Mary Brooke: I have a kind of mild hatred for her because of an extremely ill-informed review she once committed of one of my books, and an on-going - I think she thought of it as a vendetta - I thought of it as a sandfly- attack of myself. She is a Roman Catholic bigot who is a very poor children's writer. Her impertinently self-written (mostly)
self-published 'magazine' "The Best" died after very few issues.

I have a lovely letter from C. Karl.Stead describing her as "nuts." I have very few other letters from Karl, so I cherish this one.

Rofflenui: yep. I know about geekspeak, and appreciate Jacqui's crossover language point - but rofflenui *works* as a word. Point of fact: how many times has anyone seen "Te Quaeda" is print/infora/anywhere *this* year?

Whereas you *will* see rofflenui with due sttribution in my writing thus coming year.

  • Islander,

Damnty. Compulsive tic to put in a "u" after a "q" - sorry. Seriously though, "Te Qaeda" - where?

I realise our small arc of the world means diddlysquat elsewhere so rofflenui may stay within our electronic environment - but the word/concept is a real goodie and I suspect, will have a lowkey currency for many years. Thanks again Sacha!

That jogs my memory - a shriekingly bizarre attack on author Tessa Duder back in the early 90s. Unhinged by her naked envy of an award Duder had received, Brooke shamelessly plugged her own largely unread work, while painting herself as the victim (again) of a PC conspiracy.

Surely Brooke must be telegram from the Queen material - even way back then she came across as some kind of reanimated unholy relic.

Kind of reinforces my distrusts of Mac lovers.

  • Sacha,

Not disagreeing with the discussion about the competition side of things - how wide does a word need to have gone? - but am blushing now about those last couple of posts.

    Rofflenui / Roflnui

Islander, how do you prefer to spell it, given that it seems you may be the first to use it outside these here (permeable) walls?

Writing about sport does seem to produce a rich lode of unique expressions. Which ones have come into their own this year?

  • Sam F,

    Rofflenui / Roflnui

Excuse my jumping in, but I prefer the first. "Roflnui" sounds a bit too clipped - "rofflenui" sounds somehow meatier, like a laugh you could really wrap your mouth around. It's only two extra letters after all.

Enough said, what does Keri think?

Yep, it's more oral rather than on-screen. I don't really mind.

Or, to borrow the title of an old album by Pete Brown and His Battered Ornaments, A Meal You Can Shake Hands with in the Dark.
