  • Hilary Stace,

I actually think there's a real democratic benefit to having a PM who's as accessable.

Key is actually very, very carefully managed by his media minders. Only goes to friendly, usually private, schools and pre-schools for his photo ops, and carefully staged walk-abouts. Has several minders and security people with him at all times. You used to see Helen Clark or even Don Brash walking through the airport or down Lambton Quay by themselves and buying their own coffee. Not this PM. So his reaction to Paul Henry is 'relaxed' until told otherwise.

  • Ian Dalziel,

    Charlie Foxtrot Tango...

Gerry must obviously see this as a gift horse chance to redeem his public image.

    Can Gerry Brownlee's appearance on
Dancing with the Stars be far away?

    Dr Benway to Triage, please...
Every time I see the acronym AE I think
    Accident and Emergency...
...and every time I see MEAA I think MEH!

    let Paul Henry haul penury...

This blatant racism is something we are not 'relaxed about' and don't expect him (Key)
    to be either.

Wouldn't it be grand if Paul Henry dragged
    John Key down with him...
...but I fear I am dreaming

  • Matthew Poole,

What particularly pissed me off was the implication from TVNZ that Henry speaks a) for me, and b) for a lot of the country. Do we want to be that country? It hardly fits with our "fair suck at the sav" self-image, that's for sure.

To suggestions that Breakfast would go under if Henry left, well, sorry, but tough shit. If your survival hinges on a racist bigot who's given a long leash, you deserve to go down. Nothing against Pippa, who seems like a genuinely decent person from how she reacts to some of Paul's mouth-o's, but if you wallow with pigs you'll get stood on eventually.

As I've noted elsewhere, I'm sure there are plenty of Americans who agree with Rick Sanchez that the Jew York media elite is in the deathly-grip of a liberal Christ-killer circle jerk. Didn't prevent CNN deciding to sack the noxious arse-hat.

Now, I always thought it was the evil Amerikkkan media conglomerates that would roll in any faecal matter for a rating point, while New Zealand's public broadcasters where a shining beacon of integrity and standards?

  • Craig Ranapia,

And in other vaguely on-thread news, it looks like several hundred jobs on Spartacus are safe, though under very sad circumstances.

That this was inevitable doesn’t make it any less sad: Starz has officially started looking for an actor to replace Andy Whitfield on Spartacus.

According to the just-released casting notice, producers are searching for a Caucasian male in his mid to late 30s to play the “smart, intense, passionate” title role. Interested parties must have an authentic British accent and be prepared to sign a three-year contract.

Considering exec producer Steven S. DeKnight was saying last week shutting the show down was a serious option, this is the best of a bad lot for the local cast and crew.

  • Russell Brown,

Hi folks. I made you your very own Paul Henry thread, with additional musings from me:

  • BenWilson,

Timely, since my main toon just looted this last night.

    Hah, I bet that's not Tolkien's vision of a she-elf.

I presume the joke has been made a thousand times to make his middle name "Dirty".

  • Kyle Matthews,

Well, I like how you can earn experience points...

Very appropriate for the Hobbit. How that worked for Strictly Ballroom I'm less sure. Level 5 Waltz?

  • BenWilson,

Ballroom is all about the leveling, dude. I only got to Bronze Medallion myself, and could see that the next 10 levels were a grind.

  • Kyle Matthews,

I never understood how it worked for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It wasn't even level up, it was 'glitter up', and the character sheets had all this stuff about cross dressing. Very confusing for a wee innocent lad such as myself.

  • Jonathan King,

Is it just me, or have the mainstream media got the 'Hobbit rights issues almost resolved' and 'Hobbit actors issue nearly resolved (or not)' completely mixed up with each other? Which means they keep saying "progress", "resolution close" when there may be with one but in fact no movement on another.

  • Simon Bennett,

AFAIK there have been no discussions between MEAA and SPADA yet - so I suspect the actors' issues are far from resolved.

Surely as each day goes by, with the ticking clock on The Hobbit growing louder, Peter Jackson et al seen to be doing something to resolve it, people flocking to add their names to this petition ... the actors must be losing ground with their intransigence.

If nothing happens for a week and this thing goes pop -- the actors aren't walking away having won anything.

"but if you wallow with pigs you'll get stood on eventually."

Oh, Oh! So unfair to pigs. Pigs are very intelligent animals! (Unlike me, who can't for the life of me figure out how to do a quote as outlined next to the post box! Duh!)

Okay, what I did there was this:

(quote)who can't for the life of me figure out how to do a quote as outlined next to the post box! Duh!(/quote)

Except instead of parentheses, I used pointy brackets like < this and this >

    Make sense?

  • Michael Duignan,

Australian politicians wading into this now:

    http://abetz.com.au/news/australian-union-should-abide-by-the-law-in-nz-film-row

EDIT: interesting thing about the above article is that it doesn't even bother to refer to NZ actors equity. This is an Australian union calling an international boycott of a film shot in NZ. NZ actors are just along for the ride on this one I suspect.

I think the only person who can call off the boycott is Simon Whipp, not Equity's Frances Walsh, or JWL...

Does anyone know if anyone has talked to SPADA yet? Or are we still all getting the silent treatment?

  • Ian Dalziel,

    or...

Okay, what I did there was this:

Step 1: highlight and copy the instructions after Quote: in grey to the left of the "Post a reply..." box
Step 2: paste that into the "Post a reply..." box
Step 3: copy the text you want to "quote" from wherever
Step 4: highlight the word "text" from step 2
and paste the copied "quote" over it...

    ...ditto all the other permutations
then hit Preview all will be revealed prior to Posting

It's not as simple as that unfortunately.

Basically, the only way they could do this is for the MEAA to go back and tell the SAG and other member affiliates of the FIA that the initial stop work order was improperly created and void it as a result.

Which I'm not sure the MEAA is that keen to charge out and do.

I guess the suggestion some people are making is that's what should happen, and that the reason for voiding the stop work order would be something like 'due to unforseen complications with NZ legislation'??

  • Michael Duignan,

Basically, the only way they could do this is for the MEAA to go back and tell the SAG and other member affiliates of the FIA that they might not have fully represented the complexity of the NZ legal system to them.

Which I'm not sure the MEAA is that keen to charge out and do.

I guess thats what I meant - you're just way more erudite and nuanced about it than me....

    And
Notice how Ian managed to use Bold words upthread.
    which is
Step 1 Type in * followed by *
Step 2 Type your text, or copy and paste whatever. (That lesson may follow later)
Step 3 Type in * followed by *
Easy peasy! (Italics lesson if needed)

  • Pat Hackett,

The dispute now requires a skilled mediator who can find a way out for Simon Whipp and MEAA to call off the boycott without losing face. Neither seems likely. It will be very hot in a hobbit costume in Australia.
