Ah yes, the Middle East. I used to like going to the wee place in the little mall that was beneath where Whitcoulls is now. The Green Parrot Cafe, I believe it was called. I'm going to have to think of all the places I used to go in my early 20's - before I went to England and came back to Auckland Annihilated. We used to live (metaphorically speaking) in the Open Late Cafe, and I can think of all the nightclubs we used to frequent - Stanleys, Peppermint Park, and Grapes to name a few. But I have to really reel it back for the old eating places..........

Where, if not on Lorne Street, was Simple Cottage then?
High Street! (Not that I ever went there.)
As I recall, yes. Downstairs from where Vivace is now.
I'm pretty damn sure it was where metropolis is now.....or did it move there later in the game?

To go from the sublime to the ordinary - I have yet to find the Dunedin equivalent of La Porchetta for a cheap pasta meal, or Pete's Pies for inexpensive pie chips and salad..although there is a pie shop called "Who Ate All The Pies" 5 minutes walk from where I live that makes divine, but expensive, pies.....

I scored the Ramones Weird Tales Of... 4cd / dvd box-set for only $25, plus Joy Division deluxe editions, Scott Walker, assorted Flying Nun goodies and more.
Scott Walker... The ex-Walker Brothers guy who always sings in augmented 5ths? I gotta say he was way more entertaining when he were singing Burt Bacharach's tunes. But then I am a cheesy bastard! Sad I missed the sale though. I should keep up with the PA system Jonses more often!
The pipis aren't good for my gout unfortunately -- and there were none handy anyway (have you noticed how live mussels with their constant shower have disappeared from supermarket?).
Sorry about the gout, I guess I shouldn't complain so heartily about a decision I've made based on the luxury of lifestyle :s And yes I have noticed the lack of the showered mussels ... don't get me started on the conspiracy theories I have on that topic!
Ever watch Kai Time on Maori Television? Those bros had a really good handle on cooking traditional kai along with new ingredients, including plenty of olive oil.
No I haven't due to lack of tv, but it does sound goodly. Funny you should say that cos I doubt the bro's up in my hometown, Whangarei would even be able to get Maori tv... Well the reception wasn't that good last time I checked anyway.
But I'm not trying to sway you, honest. You started it ...
Oh, you don't need to sway me, my heart is already there! It's just the utter piety of my brain that won't follow or heed your seductive tales of lardo!
Good call on the tofu burgers by the way. Was inspiration for sunny Saturday brunch :)
And since I'm too young to be truly nostalgic ... Um, does anyone remember Brazil on Karangahape Road? Boy that was one darned good eating post! And a fine espresso they had too!

Can't help you with either of those I'm afraid, but Apsara is pretty good if you're looking for cheap and reasonable asian food. Good student fare.
Dunedin's best wee secret is the Friday bakery. Last time I went, it was still only open on Friday morning (sells out by about 10am) - I think most of their business is catering - at the roundabout in Roslyn. Best pastries and baking ever. Ohmigod. I don't even know what it's called, everyone seems to just call it the Friday bakery.

Hey that was really well written, RB, Much better than the fill in crap you get in the dailies at this time of the year from former reporters now turned communications pros.

Taking up the National Radio ref in your piece -
What was Noelle McCathy on about today with Garry Moore?
She was talking of private security guards in the Streets of Christchurch hired by the local firms. Garry didn't know what she was on about & neither do I.
His privious comment about lazy journos started to ring loud & true.

Sophie - Brazil!!!
Oh the esspresso, not to mention that gorgeous manual controlled-steam machine. Loved to watch the coffee being made as well as drinking it :) -

Possibly something like this:
Central Christchurch landlord Anthony Gough said business owners were concerned about safety on the streeets and had hired "ambassadors" to help keep the inner city safe.
"It's something nobody likes to hear about and is certainly something we would like to try to stamp out," he said.
The private security guards patrolled the streets seven days a week from 11am to 9pm and may soon be supplemented by a night team called Walkwise, he said.
