  • JacksonP, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Very wise this time of year…
    ;- )

I was going for silent AND invisible.

There, I fixed it for you. :-)

  • JacksonP,

    Associated with the 'twitterati' (a term I loathe, incidentally);

    Pile-on

The righteous indignation has become legion.

  • Moata T,

    Reboot
Everything from Star Wars to the X-Files and Twin Peaks this year. And Judith Collins for that matter...

    Human Rights
Not catchy, but a lot of what's dominated the news this year has been related to this, unfortunately

    Richie
    So. Much. Richie.
    Too. Much. Richie.

    Mansplain

    What does that mean?

    Here you go.

    Joe, he was being facetious.

  • TracyMac,

I thought it was funny, but a little too succinct and on point to be a representative exemplar of the breed. :-)

    Bullshite words of the year:
    Soda
    Beverage
    gotten
'experience' - as in 'we offer a unique coffee experience'

+1 - a concept I am heartily sick of, and it's starting to make me twitch at work (I'm in IT).

Also, rightsize is making me twitch too. Work has been talking outsourcing already, and now the Aussie govt have come right out and said that's their preferred IT "strategy".

(I work for a quasi-govt body - anyone know of Windows admin jobs going in Canberra that don't require security clearances?)

The twitterati are subtweeting mansplanations as we write. Consider this a subsubtweet. Woof!

My top pick is still "twitterati", but that's a solid second choice.

    Closely followed by hosking.

To be honest, I'm not quite convinced by "hosking" as a bike-related verb (veloneologism?).

I'd like to propose two different usages:

    1. Antonym of fisking ie. completely uncritical parroting of received opinion, especially opinions of the powerful. "We need serious analysis but [news commentator] has just been hosking the official line all week"
    2. An unpleasant self-indulgence far better done in private than public. "[News commentator] is entitled to his opinions but I wish he'd have a quick hosk at home instead of in front of the nation in primetime".

  • Hilary Stace,

I want a word that means why do we have to keep fighting for the same things over and over again. Latest issue. Radio NZ cutting staff including one of my favourite programmes, the gentle and intelligent, Nights. We had a big public meeting to save RNZ a few years ago and here we have to do it again and again. (I don't want to think that they are cutting resources in Wellington to pay for the flash reinvention of Checkpoint in Auckland which would make CampbellLive a little ironic.)

  • BenWilson, in reply to Sam F,

So the second definition allows variants like "Hosked all over their faces" and "What a Hosk-off", and "Hoskpot"? Presumably a panel of people doing it are "Circle Hosking", and statistics like "99.999% of people admit to hosking occasionally. The left over is Hosking".

  • chris,

    Guts and Gutless

In their way loosely related to my pick for quote of the year:

taking care of yourself, physically and emotionally, is seen as girly. Unmasculine. It’s the patriarchy, dude. Men would live longer if they softened the fuck up.

I find it hard to reconcile hosking with anything that more than one person is enjoying at a time, but sure, whatever your psyche and stomach can handle.

  • simon g,

To be tediously pedantic here, it is “Word of the year”, not “New word”. So “Flag” has to make the short list, for sheer prominence and repetition.

This much media coverage and general noise hasn’t been generated and wasted since … well, the last reality show on TV.

  • Morgan Nichol,

Mansplain. Which is a word I loathe, but other words of the year seem to fade away pretty quickly so maybe this is the way to kill it.

I think Quaxing. I'm going to jump on my velocipede and quax me some comestibles. Honorable mention to pfffft akshully and redpeak. In sci tech circles crispr is bound to be word of the year.

No I didn't read all 5 pages of comments before adding that, yes I do now see it's already been suggested. Argh I hate it so much but I had to make sure.
