  • Hard News: What you lookin' at?, in reply to Jason Kemp,

Some series have been high quality all the way through like Mad Men and Breaking Bad - and of course my favourite European shows. You want more and more. You grieve when your favourite characters are no more, like Jesse in BB and Felix in Orphan Black.
True Detective went right off the boil but Season One was thrilling. There is some good stuff on TVNZ like the recent Pike River doco but I watch it on demand. I'm finding the Spinoff website so excellent that it has almost enticed me to get Lightbox:)

Isn't this the Golden Age of TV? The French and Scandinavian shows, US TV. From the Wire on there have been such superb shows available that why would anyone want to watch something second-rate? Through Netflix, and Plex (friend's UK TV and more) I've seen Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Orphan Black, The Bridge, The Killing, Borgen, Making a Murderer, Spiral. Right now I'm watching a French series called Un Village Francais. The French can do characters you care about par excellence. I've ordered the Danish "The Legacy" as a treat for myself. DVD from Amazon. Expensive but I have to see it. I enjoyed the first series of Trivial Pursuit but these days TVNZ and TV3 make me cringe. I think I'm sulking because of our terrible news, but whatever the cause, the dumbed down news has put me off NZ television ... and I'm a boomer raised on a single channel.

  • Polity: Political strategy and Canada’s NDP, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

    See also "hard working keeeewwwees".

It's a political narrative that came from the right and is all about dividing the people you want to vote for you from an Other, who are condemned as lazy, dishonest, violent, abusive, etc

I've been mulling over this. I didn't like it when Shearer, then Cunliffe and now Little started mouthing "hard-working New Zealanders". This post has finally made me realise why that ghastly expression is used.

I'm with Corbyn, Sanders and the Pope. We need systemic change and bugger the centre.

  • Speaker: Honest Bastards & Dishonest Cowards,

And it also makes voters aware of what it stands for, rather than what it stands against.

Helen Clarke said on Q&A that Labour has to appeal to the centre as well as its base - and groom its leader. Politics it too "political". I want a Labour Party to crusade on the things it believes in: justice, integrity, equality, a caring society, free education, care for the environment. It isn't economically reckless and it has the moral high ground. There have been some truly horrible right wing outbursts (by Key supporters?) lately which show the ignorance the privileged display about how society works. Labour and the Greens are or should be seen to be on the side of the angels.

  • Hard News: Campbell Live: A Disturbance…,

Is he called White Man Behind a Desk???? Very good.

John Campbell and his team have excelled themselves this week. TV 3 does not deserve them.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live,

The last two nights of Campbell Live have been particularly good. Oh what fools TV3 have been.

  • Hard News: Mediaworks: The only horizon…, in reply to Bart Janssen,

Yes, it would be sad to lose his face. He's at the top of his game and has grown handsomer over the years IMHO. In spite of his occasional gushing he has a great sense of humour. I'd love to see him in something like The Daily Show: satirical but compassionate - online?
