  • Steve Barnes,

Hey, tax cut fans. If you wanted change you should have just checked down the back of the couch, you may well have been better off.

  • Craig Ranapia,

On the other hand, to be all Pollyanna-ish for a moment, it is comforting that we had an election and normal service resumed without a pause.

If that's vaguely directed towards me, you couldn't be more off base.

  • HenryB,

    Andrew E:

But as Deborah and a few others found, it was difficult to vote for Labour if you felt like they'd abandoned principle. So, as much as I support tactical voting, I'm not going to diss people who couldn't stomach voting for Labour.

The point here is that tactical voting allows you to use your electorate vote to vote against something as much to use your Party vote to vote for something. Ohariu was an opportunity to vote against someone who had said that, under no circumstances, could he work with a government which had the Greens on board. It was the very best opportunity for the Greens to make an impact.

  • Danielle,

Yeah, the US is just back from the brink of totally stupid and dangerous wingnuttery, rather than creating cooperative farms and doling out billionaires' bank accounts to the homeless. I mean, that health care system? And their employment laws? Yeesh. I'll stay here, ta.

I still have no idea what Craig wants National to do, though...

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Chauvel is another one to watch come up the ranks too.
Hey Craig, having just read Chris's article in SST , (most viewed today) I at least know where he wears his heart and today it was purely and sincerely where I saw it the other night, a staunch Labour supporter that writes with passion and believes in the good of the country as a whole. Nothing wrong with that in my book. It is his prerogative and his opinion that readers find agreeable that someone just mentioned on the radio and I think he wrote genuinely from the heart. I don't for one minute think he is concerned how the entire world views his writing style, he just farewelled one of our best Prime Ministers who he wanted to acknowledge ,so as much as you like to pick on his style, I can only think that it belittles you IMHO

  • Craig Ranapia,

    HenryB:

I'm floating a kite here (that tiresome secret ballot malarky and all), but perhaps everyone in Ohariu-Belmont who cast their party votes Labour's way (and that was over a thousand more than voted for Charles Chauvel) did so because in their considered view Labour was the best choice? I guess there were a lot of people out there who weren't willing to take 'tactical' risk, and perhaps be too damn smart for their own good. Then again, I'm one of these people who say cast two considered votes for what you really believe and let the chips fall where they may.

And to give the Greens full credit, they expanded their caucus. Sure, their party vote must have been a disappointment considering a number of polls had them close to or breaking ten percent, but they've not nothing to feel bad about. I can't point at anything about the Greens campaign and say "WTF were these numpties thinking".

Agreed ... and their campaign had the simple, though beautifully executed, message "PARTY vote Green". All I am saying is that in Ohariu their supporters could have used their other vote to try and vote out someone who had no time for the Greens at all. The only other electorates where they remotely had this kind of opportunity were Tauranga and Rimutaka.

  • Andrew E,

Have you checked down the back of your couch?

Yes. Sadly, nothing doing there. But since I think tax-cuts are the wrong way to go, and that Labour shouldn't have succumbed to the media hype for them, I'd rather find something down the back of the sofa than getting more money via the route you see as the alternative. I measure wealth in ways other than the size of my pay packet.

Sofie: "Sincerely" comparing an election loss to the murder of three thousand people just makes you a sincere idiot. "Sincerely" comparing critics of Winston Peters to pack rapists and lynch mobs make you "sincerely" vile, and in my view either unhinged or cynically trolling for work. "Sincerely" believing breaking election rules, as long as it keeps the wrong people out of power, is... well, I don't want to drop that particular F-bomb here.

But, hey, at least Chris Trotter knows the plural form of fascista_- is __fascisti. Isn't he a clever little bunny!
The kind of heart that comes from is, in my opinion, a rather weak and diseased organ.

And I'm sorry if this offends Joe Wylie once more, but if certain sections of the left don't like being compared to the right-wingnuts that make Kiwiblog such a nasty place they shouldn't behave like it. Work though the whole Keubler-Ross deal, but don't take too long about it.

Meh... "Sincerely" believing breaking election rules is "courageous corruption", as long as it keeps the wrong people out of power, is disturbingly close to, well, I don't want to drop that particular F-bomb here....

Get it out of your system because in a few days you will all be singing Key's praises. That's if the US election is anything to go by:

Many Of Obama's Harshest Critics Now Rushing To Praise Him...
Bachmann: Obama's Victory "A Tremendous Signal"...
    Palin: "God Bless Barack Obama"...
    Lieberman: Obama's A "Genuine Patriot"...
    Bill Kristol Congratulates Obama

Those are the headlines from HuffPo right now.
