It does rather rejuvenate that old St Patrick's Day joke about offering a prayer that they may yet find a cure for the Irishness.

    Sacha:
I did feel a twinge of guilt after posting that, as I once whored myself out to ZM by doing a poster promo illustration. Sweet enough guy I dealt with came round after hours to pick it up & drop a cheque. While he was there Devo's Satisfaction aired for the first time on TV, and being 1978 & all I had to watch it. Poor Mr ZM was visibly disconcerted, and while he allowed that it was probably amusing, he had to draw the line at the baby with the toaster, as people might try that sort of thing at home.

Musically. Not lyrically. Lyrically, Someone Like You is Dido's White Flag. White Flag wins by dint of having David Boreanaz in the video:

Musically, I hear whine. Lyrics must be resonating for her target audience. Such a waste of a great voice.

Well, (a) that’s not a musical complaint and, (b) pop songs are allowed to be sad.

I actually think Adele’s a pretty good lyricist. I don’t, and won’t, own 21 – but I think there’s an elemental quality to what she does that lends itself really well to remixing.

I realise that some folks aren’t going to like this at all, but I fucking love it in all its big girly disco-ness:

  • Russell Brown,

Oh hell, while we're at it ...

'Rolling in the Deep' as bustling club banger:

A brilliant D&B take on 'Hometown Glory':

And a lovely chilled bootleg of 'Rolling in the Deep':

I have played the hell out of all of these.

For me, it's that particular tone she maintains throughout, and the repetitive structure that highlights it. Not the lyrics.

No issues with Adele's other songs, though I'm clearly not the 'girly' audience.

pop songs are allowed to be sad

    Fine with that too.

From reading this story I'm guessing that were Kate Winslet to post in this thread she'd pick this song as her poison:

Speaking of bad music, I accidentally heard some Dave Matthews Band on the radio today for the first time.

One distinct memory from back then shaped my stance on copyright and music companies back in 1986 :

In 1986 TVNZ took all music shows off the air following a dispute with record companies, who were demanding payment for video clips that were becoming increasingly expensive to produce. TVNZ refused to pay to screen them on the grounds that this was ‘a form of sales promotion’.

What goes around comes around, eh.
