    TRIGGER WARNING

Talking to a friend earlier, who works at Police National Headquarters. Several staff in lunch-room. Conversation turns, as it does, to the scandal of the day. Old-school 50-something cop: "it's only rape because her boyfriend found out."

    Fuck the police.

Apparently the Solicitor General's guidelines on bringing prosecutions with no chance of success aren't quite so tightly binding when the Police think they are the "victims" of offending

  • DexterX, in reply to Matthew Poole,

You need to pull your head in and show others some respect.

However, until you can provide me evidence that this entire saga is about glossing over the involvement of a cop’s son, you’re not going to get me to concede anything like what you’re seeking. Fuck’s sake,

I feel as far as the Police are concerned evidence doesn't matter - ironic as it is - evidence can be made up, destroyed - it is largely malleable for purpose.

The entire saga is about many things that include "glossing" over the involvement of a group of young males, that include a police officer's son, who have, by their own admission in social media, stupefied and raped for a sustained period with impunity till now.

my unwillingness to join the trendy pile-on rankles

People have a right to express outrage at the whole situation and are right in doing so , for you to be rankled by that expression and to trivialise it to mere trend is belittling of that concern.

    show me the fucking proof!

I find you closing comment pretty distasteful and also resorting to the words “Fuck”, “Fuck’s sake” insensitive in the circumstances, bearing in mind that at the core of this is the rape of minors.

The manner you are expressing yourself shows has no sensitivity or compassion for the victims. I feel you really need to think hard about the issues – your locking horns and abuse are all about you with little consideration for others.

The lack of consideration for others and readily resorting to abuse are the seed of problem – it appears so ingrained in you that you are unlikely to see it.

  • Rich Lock, in reply to Matthew Poole,

I'm sure you'd be one of the first to cry foul if incidences of use of firearms or Tasers increased because officers were not required to meet such rigorous physical standards, but if you don't have the strength the only alternative is to use a weapon.

Without wishing to add to the derail, you are offering this as an either/or (strength, or heavy weapon), and don't seem willing to consider that non-frontline roles could be created or expanded without diluting the physical requirements.

I know two NZ serving police officers. One is female, slightly build and around 5'4''. Last I heard, she was a specialist detective working in child protection having served her 'street time'. She was the only female in the unit. The other was around six foot and was an amateur boxer. He told me a story once of how he arrested a guy P'd off his head who started acting up rough. A couple of gentle taps to the groin with the nightstick didn't calm him down, so the intensity went up. Apparently, the guy just about started to notice he was being repeatedly smashed in the nuts with full force around the ninth or tenth strike.

While I agree that physical fitness is important, you'll have to work a lot harder to convince me that it's the be-all and end-all you're making it out to be.

  • Rich Lock,

To expand on that slightly, I am reliably informed that control/restraint techniques are not taught well in the NZ police training curriculum, and there is little to no on-going or follow-up training. And why would there be in a culture where brute force can be used instead?

It's harder to learn effective control/restraint, but it can be used effectively even with very large body size differentials. A culture less focussed on brute force and with a more finessed training and fitness standard would perhaps value these sort of skills more.

  • Craig Ranapia,

For ten minutes last night, I thought I was being a little unfair in calling for Peter Marshall to be sacked. Now? Fuck it.

Police Commissioner Peter Marshall has denied the reputation of the entire police force is on the line over revelations a young girl had laid a formal complaint over the behaviour of the Roast Busters group, despite police earlier saying they had been hamstrung because there had been no complaints.

Let’s review – It was a flat out lie that there “no complaints”. What actually happened is that at least one victim of the Roast Busters went to the Police, and was slut-shamed into going away. And like some infomercial in hell, wait! There’s more!

If Marshall thinks that hasn’t harmed the reputation of the whole Police force, he’s not only incompetent (or flat out corrupt and a pathological liar) he’s ... detached from reality.

Judicious use of “bullshit” to a couple of bullshitters on the radio was also to the point. Well done, it put paid to their whole angle that only the “leftist media” was against the idea of slut shaming and victim blaming, and considering rape to be more than “mischief”.

  • Bart Janssen,

So I've been away from my keyboard for a week. Reading this thread has been (mostly) heartening. Most of what I wanted to say has been said so I have just this.

I am a fairly strong supporter of The Police. I believe for the most part they are good people doing a shit job. BUT

This morning I saw a senior police officer QQ'ing about how we should focus on the real bad guys and stop picking on the police ...

    He is UTTERLY WRONG.

As evil and amoral as the scum that raped those girls are, they are not the most important issue in this disgusting saga. At worst those criminals could only harm a small number of women (and believe me I hate to use that phrase when we should be 100% rape-free NZ).

By contrast, the presence of a culture in the police force that allows rapists to continue to rape by slut shaming the women (and others) who are the victims, harms every rape victim until that culture is abolished.

    So here's what I want.

I want the police in west Auckland investigated so thoroughly their skin turns red and they can't sit for month. I'm sorry for those who will be put through the mill unfairly that is the price you pay for allowing your colleagues to be scum.

I want the lying scum policepersons found and identified and thrown in jail for the harm they have allowed to occur. They should lose their jobs but they should also be criminally liable (and yes I know they are not). They do have to be ejected from the police force.

I want their managers to be ejected from the police force. If they knew they should go. If they didn't know, they should have, they should go. They took the job of managing which comes with responsibility as well as a pay raise - they should go.

I want the managers of those managers to go. They took even more money for a responsible job. They need to be responsible.

I want every single manager on the path from those police that failed on the beat in west Auckland all the way up to and including the commissioner to be fired. Not given the opportunity to resign but fired, with loss of retirement benefits and every bit of shame that goes with being found unfit for the job they were given.

That just might send a strong enough message to the staff and managers that allowing rapists to wander the streets is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

I won't get what I want, I know that. But writing this makes me cry, those women ... girls ... children have had their lives and childhoods torn asunder. The police are meant to be there to protect those that cannot protect themselves ... the police have failed so badly in this case, how can we accept that any of those involved get to keep their jobs.

    Oh yes ... I'm angry.
