Hard News: Keeping Austin Weird

  • Damian Christie,

How difficult would it be for an enterprising (read: time rich, money poor) writer to boost his or her page views to guarantee the three-fiddy? Or are their technological/subscription barriers in place?

I need to quiz Barry on exactly how this works and whether they actually mean page-views, subscribers who read each story or whatever.

  • Damian Christie,

    Indeed. Cos I reckon $300 for pushing F5 eight-hundred times is a pretty sweet deal… #lifeafterTVNZ7

  • Graham Dunster,

I've had a subscription to the NBR forever, but there is no longer any must read material in the printed edition. I have no interest spending my money on online access if it isn't (even historically) in the print version.

  • Kumara Republic,

SXSW is one conference that doesn't rely on old boys' networks to run, unlike certain big casinos we're familiar with. If anything, old boys' networks would rightly be laughed off stage.

It could be a template for Wellington to follow, given the egghead-breaking masquerading as fiscal restraint going on in the capital right now.

  • Damian Christie,

Old Boys Network could very well be one of the 1300 odd acts performing at SXSW, it seems 'ironic enough' for a hipster outfit.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Well, Austin TX has competition. I picked up a bumper sticker in Portland ORE a couple of weeks ago which read Portland : Keep It Weird They claim prior ownership on it. In either case, I think they are only mildly or respectably weird.

Hey Damian - let's say I write a one-click script for you that does this work for you and you pay me $50 every time you use it. Sound good?

  • Hebe,

Tbh, I'm way more comfortable with "a McDonald's burger" than "one of McDonald's burgers". And I really can't say why

    Last para:

Mr O'Rourke, referring to the part of tape in which Mr Key reportedly says that New Zealand First's supporters were dying off, asked "has the Prime Minister sought or received any information on how many elderly New Zealand First supporters died during the course of the police investigation?"

    Nice.

Austin is the home of Stratfor, so perhaps it isn't as unlike the rest of Texas as it boasts.

You can also throw in Alex Jones. But compared with say, Houston or Dallas, it is most certainly different on balance.
