  • Simon Grigg,

only enough to abandon it as a viable business model and relinquish it to the novelty act that it was, got em good attention, worked once, not so much the next time someone tried it.

Yep, I agree it worked well for them. That was all it was supposed to do, nothing else is vaguely relevant...err haven't we been over this time and time again?

  • Simon Grigg,

You do realise you can push the stop button right?

    And then, good frisbee.

    Do Mp3s return?

    indeed

    Henrik Schwarz, Dixon & AME,

pure subjective moment, as I read that i was most way through version 1 of d.p.o.m.b [any idea what that stands for?] there is a moment there where it sounds like a modern twist on early nineties dubhouse, kinda like what garnier is doing at the moment. is good.

there are no hidden depths here, apart from the fact that i adore a nice serving of serendipity, and it is always worth the slight ritual of a celebration, make the etherial i small bit realer.

    carry on.

  • Danielle,

the last night of The Elvis & The Attractions, Hammersmith Palais circa 84/85..1 1/2 hours of encores.

Simon, you know I say this with love and admiration, but: I hate you. :)

Best gig. If not the ultimate, certainly very close: Super Furry Animals, Rings Around the World tour, Austin, Texas, 2000ish. Tiny club! Giant screens! Wacky animations! Celery-throwing! Mind-destroying loudness!

  • Danielle,

If ever the Antichrist were loose upon the land, it would look -- and sound -- like Brooke Fraser.

Oh, I forgot to say: she's got *something* nefarious on her side, because at that David Bowie show in Wellington a few years back, the only clear skies of the entire night were during her set. As soon as the Dame arrived? Pissing down for hours. Meh.

I think last time it was visited there seemed to be a brave new world slant to radioheads bold move toward a visionary business model. the linked article kinda dampens that vibe,

Digital frisbee. Throw it at Robbery.

you kiwi guys and your physical activity.
I'm boycotting all sport cos I just sat through the build up to the olympics and that god awful 2 tribes rip off music tv1 saw fit to run through the back of their "nz and the olympics" thing. it may take some time to recover.

  • Bruce Wurr,

tackhead were amazing...saw them twice at the p station, the first time suffered said hearing loss and me ears were muffled fer days.....I remember a blistering version of crosstown traffic......ears recovered enough in time to see headless chickens with Rupert fronting alongside c. mathews......instant further loss of hearing for another 4 days....

Prompting a swift investment in earplugs!

Have just seen the tackhead boys in the guise of mark stewart and the mafia - a sherwood mixing, was fantastic. Expect some more on-u soon.

  • Jackie Clark,

The APRAs eh? Well, I am sincerely glad to see Phoenix Foundation in there. I love that song, alot. And I think big rewards are due these young men for the fine music they make. On a personal note, I was really expecting to see Mahinaarangi Tocker's name there. I don't know why. I just thought that after her death, it would be a lovely way for the music industry to say haere ra to a phenomenal songwriter, who, I might add, wrote shitloads of lyrics for a lot of people.

  • Craig Ranapia,

As if Radiohead care. Anyway you look at it for them it was a massive and resounding success. They made more money than they'd ever made before because they owned the master, had a huge publicity blitz and a number one US album...

And actually made am album that wasn't the aural equavalent of waterboarding the converted? Tom Yorke, IMNSHO, is the inverse Brooke Fraser -- with Fraser, enormous amounts of time and effort go into producing musical rice pudding. With Yorke, there's so much self-conscious "ART" going on, it's ever bit as tedious.

I kind of agree with you, but Tocker is another person in the arts where it would have been damn nice if she'd gotten a little more recognition when she was around to enjoy (and, yes, profit) from it. Bugger.

  • Sacha,

Robbery - snapper @ canty uni. Yes!

Was I imagining things or was Alan Haig simultaneously drumming a different time signature with each hand at some stage of that gig? I was right up the front watching his hands but wouldn't vouch for the veracity o my senses by that stage - especially after the Winnie the Pooh readings in the other room.

  • robbery,

don't know about haig's timing acrobatics but I was the perfect combination of an intense performance, cool songs, and perfect sound, paul kean on the desk who pulled a sonic masterpiece in a usually shitty sounding room.
I have a recording of the concert somewhere.

  • Sacha,

Was it Paul Kean? Thought it might have been one of the times Brent McLachlan was on the desk. They did wonderfully to get anything good out of that room, fer sure.

I don't think anyone ever said that. All I ever said was that it was a roaring success for Radiohead, and it was. Nothing has changed there.

And I wake up this morning and find myself agreeing with Craig. Absolutely.

The Rice Pudding description was both bang on and made me laugh.

Best of all possible words, and I don't have anything against rice pudding -- or pleasant enough but unmemorable muzak, come to that. Sometimes bland and inoffensive is just were I want my head to be. But not all the bloody time.

  • hugh frost,

Is no one going to put in a good word for Anika?

Having said that, my vote would by for Liam Finn

Best gig? They Might Be Giants, Powerstation 1990

or The Residents, same venue 1986

I no longer know if it's a good song or not, but Weezer's "Pork and Beans" has been earworming me for the last few weeks

    simon,
    lets have your
    - 5 best nz band gigs not featuring a turntable, one has to be in the last 10 years. (has to be a specific gig, not just 'the screaming mee mees' etc, one where the band went beyond performing their great songs, where the event left a permanent impression on you, not physically hopefully)

    - your 3 best overseas bands playing in nz gigs

    - the best thing or 3 you've seen out of nz

and if you must, something involving djs and mass audiences.
