Just getting this over to System ...
Although you'll need to view the original post to see those videos at their full span.

So that's what my boy Hobbes gets up to when I'm not with him. Puts a collar on and plays drums! (See my gravatar for the fellow himself.)

The Time Cinema in Lyall Bay is a great place. Autism Wellington's adult group has a yearly visit where they view an appropriately selected programme (going tomorrow in fact). But the movie part is almost less fascinating than the extensive memorabilia on display. I've also been there for birthday celebrations and fundraisers.

I knew it.
I put together this whole list of music, media and memories -- and the first comment is about the kitteh video I stuck in at the last moment.
Ah, the internet.

This might add to your Christchurch music nostalgia - 80s band posters on the Christchurch City Libraries website, including quite a few from the Newtones.

Massive nostalgia rush. We still have some of those posters somewhere ...

No consideration of the merits of Cee-Lo's ditty is complete without Whitney Avalon's line-by-line rejoinder.

I like the cat who plays Steve McQueen's role in Bullit.
(In case you were wondering where the car chase was from.)
-
I wonder whether anyone's done a mashup of Lily Allen's "Fuck You" and Holy Fuck's "Lovely Allen".
-
Dunno if they are related, but this facebook page is dedicated to flying nun and expressway posters.

Ah, the internet.
But Russell, I looooves cats!
-
but perhaps the best of them – and it comes with the Danielle seal of approval – is the Le Castle Vania remix
Oh man, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it. I could not love its big phat-bassed dancey Prince-synthy disco-stringy E'd-up ass more. I owe you! (Again.)
If anyone needs me, I shall be over here playing it for the mumblemumbleth time.

Cats are ambivalent about you.

My cat Linus sneaks out of the house at night to go to band practice too.

Internet History - Ahh the Good old Days of Usenet (alt.tasteless anyone?). I did miss some of these as the text-based services died (when did xtra stop carrying them anyway?) and the flame wars and spamming became intolerable.
Moved up from the BBS world to an Actrix unix account in 1991, when they offered an actual unix prompt to use over the 1200 baud connection. I don't think I've had a *nix login since which is probably a good thing.

Tony also played music – most notably in the Newtones, with my old schoolmate Mark Brooks, formerly of the Vauxhalls.
Mark has a comment on the thread now which, like others, is full of happy but misty memories of Tony. a man who, for want of a better phrase, changed so many lives, and the musical conversation in New Zealand.
Much of what was being played and listened to beyond Christchurch back then came from people returning from the southern city, box of records in hand.
I've added a quick comment to the original post too:
When I was first told of Tony’s passing (by Jim Wilson and Paul Mcneil – I woke to PMs on Facebook from both) we all made comment that we hoped that something would be written to remember an extraordinary man, but we worried that it would, as is New Zealand’s way with so much of its left of mainstream culture, simply pass into history without record. The comments on this page and the various Facebook threads have proved us wrong.

ok I won't add anything about the kittehs...
but dammit, beats & cats are an awesome combo ;)

Those cats have broken me out of a downer mood. Moar plz ser!

The band also got the thumbs-up from The Guardian this week, although the story's claim that 'Young Blood' "recently became the first song by a Kiwi band to reach No 1 in their home country for 20 years" is hilariously wrong
That's inexcusably wrong. Where on earth would they have got that idea?
-
That Laneway lineup looks sweet: Beach House would be my pick. Shame that Auckland's missing Bear in Heaven and The Antlers though.
Matthew: it's the Guardian, "inexcusably wrong" is their USP...
-
The Laneway lineup is astounding. Ariel Pink released the standout album of the year for me, Beach House = awesome, Deehunter = awesome etc etc. Really mind boggling just how many great bands are playing. Sadly I wont be there.
I can just listen to this song on repeat instead;
There has been lots of net chatter about Unknown Mortal Orchestra this week, and the question of who are these guys. I first heard them a couple months ago at iguessimfloating but somehow the Mint Chickyness of it passed me by. After Flying Nun posted a track to their bandcamp page it seemed pretty likely that this was some sort of Minties related project. IGIF say they received the track mysteriously from someone called Ruban...
What ever, the two songs by UMO released so far are off the hook radness.
...ooops long comment, I should have just written a blog.

...and hey any other Telstra customers out there? They just upped my internet speed to 15mbs and my allowance from 10 to 20 gig without changing the charge. boom.

Thanks for that, Samuel. One of the things that really interests me is that having previously disparaged much contemporary music - apart from your band's wonderful output, and people like Gianmarco Liguori - as just noise really, I am enjoying a bit of a rethink. Mostly thanks to PAS readers/writers and their recommendations. Much of the best stuff gets lost amongst all the hiphop/heavy rock crap - before I get jumped on, understand that my tastes in music include Simply Red (yes, I'm off to see them tomorrow) and Elton John's earlier musical stylings - so it's just lovely to discover little gems here.
-

Yes, got my monthly phone/internet bill yesterday. Despite assuring me last month that there'd be no moving fee for those forced from their home by the Christchurch earthquake, I've been hit with a $60 charge. After 3+ years of regularly paying my bills, that really sucks.
-
that really sucks.
That does suck. I think its their customer service which lets them down. In terms of what they actually provide I think they are way ahead of any other options in Wellington. I tend to get a bit flustered when dealing with them over the phone, actually I am really quite rude to service centre people now, it seems to get you what you want faster (and then makes me feel awful when I've hung up).
However, having the speed of my broadband has tripled in the time I have been with Telstra and they have never put up their prices in any significant way. Just so weird that they have never rolled out their cable network in Auckland.
