  • Rich of Observationz,

    I wonder if the Guardian will be offering NZ coverage and commentary on election day, being outside the jurisdiction and that.

  • Katharine Moody,

    Ex-customs official (a lawyer) comes forward on OIA manipulation by government;

    And Chief Ombudsman launches a wide ranging investigation;

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11327328

    She says:

    "We may as well kiss democracy goodbye. The work of this office relies in great measure in the maintenance of a high level of trust and integrity between ourselves and government agencies," she said.

    "If our examination and investigation finds that has been betrayed or warped in any way that is something I am going to be taking very seriously and I think the public of New Zealand should be taking very seriously because it attacks the whole integrity of the system of governance."

    Dame Beverley said whistleblowers should make contact with the Office of the Ombudsman if they had evidence of such practices.

    If the Nats get another term in coalition with NZ First - Winston Peters might become the PM after all.

  • CJM,

    The corruption within the National party is deep and wide. Peters needs to understand that, cleaning it out would be a job for someone with a very strong stomach. And the smell of such unwholesome shit lingers a long time.

    And Chief Ombudsman launches a wide ranging investigation

    And in a surprise policy change National will replace the Chief Ombudsman's office with the more appropriate Chief Lapdogs office in order to improve consistency in reporting standards across all government departments.

  • Greg Dawson, in reply to Katharine Moody,

    Given the performance stats that No Right Turn plunders from time to time, it wouldn’t be surprising if certain ministerial offices were causing more than a reasonable number of requests to get lost at sea. Hopefully the Ombudsman decides to keel haul someone, get them the priority they should have.

    And it is 100% certain the whistle-blower's life is being investigated as we speak, by the Nationa ... sorry, by "forces of nature" who have nothing to do with the PM, no sir.

    Attack post on Kiwi-Oil coming in 3, 2, 1 ...

    Repeated uncritically by favoured media outlets in 5,4,3 ...

    Interestingly, the first 10 comments were all totally against the Herald &/or the National Party. I normally don't read the comments (to avoid dismay at humanity), but all of these commentators were polite and made sensible statements. Is that a first ?

    Interesting. Is that his role in the National Party, or his role in the beehive as well? (Because he was probably slated to quit the party role after the election, and resume working for the PM's office.)
    He'd have an interesting story to tell, if he chose to spill it. The question is, has he quit in disgruntlement feeling abandoned, or has he resigned as a strategic move, possibly engineered, to pop up fairly soon in some cushy job-for-life?

    For those types of people it's usually public relations or a warmed-up boardroom seat.

    Stuff’s stuffed (Ede) story

    Key said this morning he understood Ede had resigned, but that he had not suggested he Ede so.

    "[Ede] decided the time has come for him to leave," Key said on TV3's Firstline.
    ...
    "Jason Ede advised of his resignation, effective immediately, on Friday. Along with the Prime Minister and his office, we thank Jason for his 11 years of service to the National Party and wish him well for his future."
    The party would not be making any further comment.

    ha! and HA! I’m always amazed how you see so far Ian. Magic. I should probably rattle me daggs, I don’t want to burst too many bubbles and although this year’s jamboree has been an absolute binder, it’s obviously left me with a lot to think about, things which I can do nothing about here.

    Thanks for not banning me Russell and the best of luck to everyone, if I stepped on your toes with this exercise in free speech, get real. And for any of you who might be on the cusp of adulthood and feeling kind of daunted about the future in this brave new world, (I know there’s one or two of you) one last special song from a kinder simpler time to get your twerk on to.

    I actually enjoyed your posts. But then again, I really like discussions on PA, because mostly everyone argues cleanly, and backs their opinions up.

    Me too. I think it's perfectly understandable why Taslov feels so passionate about all the discoveries over the past year and to see it's conclusion where it would seem the majority of New Zealanders find it perfectly acceptable is abominable and I think that also. we have now just told the National Party, anything goes. we may as well sing God save New Zealand and watch some rugby eh?

  • John Armstrong,

    If anyone is interested, the good folks over at actionstation have set up a petition calling for a Royal Commission into Dirty Politics.

    For me, in the current context, signing felt like an incredibly... small act, but I did so because I very much share the sentiment expressed in the e-mail they sent me yesterday; it is no longer sufficient just to stay as informed as possible and to exercise my democratic right every three years. Time to get off the proverbial arse. (I realise that signing an e-petiton is not technically getting off my arse, but it's the first example of putting into action a new conviction to take every opportunity to make a contribution.)
