It may be 'suggestions' now but just wait
''The council is going to have to find a lot of funds,'' Brownlee said.

Hard to find funds when you don't know what they are for, no? I can see the trip to the mystery money person now...I need money for some stuff that I am waiting to be told what it's for.
Ideologically Gerry has a conundrum. How you you privatise the profit and socialise the debt when your boss says no one owns water but your Govt. created ECan? -
Question for Chch locals: if I lived somewhere in the CBD or Frame areas, where would I most likely shop for food?

New World (South City), Pak 'n Save (Moorhouse), Countdown (Moorhouse)?

Pak N Save or Countdown on Moorhouse Ave, or South City.
[Edit: oh whoops, snap!]

But do not rule out Hop Yick. Still going strong.

Yeah, also the Indian Supermarket on Durham St by the back of South City.

Where will the red light district be?
I seem to remember Christchurch had the highest number of massage parlors per head of population in NZ. -
There is going to be a *lot* of opposition to a new cricket ground in Hagley Park. I'm half thinking it's there as a sacrificial duck.

How many contradictions can John Key juggle?
In regard to the acquisition of land for the plan, the Government’s aim was to ‘‘negotiate on a consensual basis with land owners but if we can’t then we will be forced, by virtue of the fact that we need all the land in The Frame, to involuntarily acquire that land. The general feeling is that we should be able to clear it up by the end of the first quarter of 2013, but let’s see,’’ Key said.
Land acquisition was a necessity, he said.
"It's really the only option if you want to get an integrated, co-ordinated 21st century city, otherwise you would require organic growth and it would be very hotchpotch, certainly not the result we want for Christchurch.
"We'll work very fairly with people. We're certainly not trying to rip anyone off. But on the other side of the coin we've got to get going . . . the land's not worth a lot in it's current state."

I note the "partners" involved for the Frame are:
Partners: CCC, ECan, NZTA, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, the philanthropic sector and the private sector
It is all still just a big wish list unless those last two step up, The Press headline said "Key backs roofed Stadium" (or similar) - isn't it grand that a philanthropic multi-millionaire is giving us a 'guarantee against loss'...
How you you privatise the profit and socialise the debt when your boss says no one owns water but your Govt. created ECan?
Don't show John and Gerry this then...
I also note in the plan that the maps they are using don't show any tram tracks?
(though there is a pic of a tram somewhere in there)The council is also allegedly starting a Life in Vacant Spaces programme - for inner city markets and the like, which could be good....
and they reckon all done by 2017!
Hell I reckon I'll be lucky if I'd heard from EQC again by then... -

I’m fine with folksy if he’s not saying all these mutually-exclusive things are true:
1. Voluntary land acquisition will be compulsory.
2. Done by the start of next year, unless it isn’t.
3. We will offer a fair price for land as long as it’s cheap.
And filled out with the tautology:
4. Organic growth is not rigidly planned growth. And since we are rigidly planning the growth, it can't be organic.

merc,
Collecting your own rainwater is banned in Auckland, no? In fact they charge us to take it away. As for their partners, well aren't they all going to be looking for money from someone? This is the sham, everybody going to be borrowing to get on the gravy train, except us that is, because you know, needs to be said, John, it isn't your cash man, or your assets, or your water even, it's all ours baby. And your Govt. is borrowing truckloads right now to simply keep afloat - elephant meets room.
The system they are using is age old, just like the east to west railway competition in America, just wait until the tenders don't come out.
Oh that's right, Fletcher got it all.
Lilith, on all those points I think we know where John really stands - fence meets post. -

...by virtue of the fact that we need all the land in The Frame
Looking at the "plans" they do seem to be factoring quite a few buildings into that 'Frame' area - perhaps some could be pre-existing, I hope the new timber building being built at the moment for the Hi tech incubator near the corner of St Asaph and Manchester is one, as The Frame starts there....
and here's hoping it stays The Frame rather than becoming The Borderlands - I will await further details... -

Hell, I'd have thought they'd be grateful for any water diverted from their parlous stormwater system at the moment...

Sacha, in reply to
Tech innovation precinct is curiously not highlighed on their plan, but is still where it is now. And yes, the supposed green space does seem rather full of buildings.
-
merc,
OK heresy alert. I knew they blew it when they said CBD, stadia and 8 stories high convention delux. Put in fibre and de-centralise. Don't build buildings that do nothing but house cubicle farms for absentee landlords.
Build a 2012 city, not a 1962 one. -

Then WTF is all this stuff about voluntary compulsory acquisition?
<gives up trying to understand the plan>

The problem is that stormwater and sewerage are not separated, our overflow outflow is the harbours. No money honey, bad times, are you a traitor, don't you know what it takes to run a city...I don't surf after rain unless it is life-threateningly good.
Our waters are a disgrace, and that includes our west coast - especially so after heavy rainfall because you know, septic tanks - you been paying rates for something but clean water it ain't. -
Gregor Ronald, in reply to
Agree - several times I've been introduced to a new city by going to a conference there. I want to go back to Adelaide and Cairns for that reason, had 3 days in each and would like to see more.

Hedges, I meant hedges. A name for the eastern green frame? The Boulevard of Broken Dreams of course.
