  • muz950,

I find it hard to go past Nicolinis - not the flashest of decor but the food is excellent (especially if you have a big appetite).

    Or maybe metropole.

  • Ross Bell,

Floriditas has good food/service, but gets much too loud at lunchtime. Opposite is Le Metropolitain - a good French bistro; down the road on the corner is Ernestos.

The new awesomeness in Wellington has to be Meow on Willis St - but probably not so Mum-friendly, and gets a bit loud.

If Nikau has opened again (and I think they have), then that´s your best bet (confirming earlier suggestion of kedgeree).

The ultimate is, of course, Matterhorn. Go on, treat your Mum!

  • Jono,

4WD (Low Ratio) by Jethro Tull. One of their worst, synthy pieces, and an ode to the new rich moving to the country with their Land Rovers, apparently. But when the piano comes in at about 0.50 seconds it sounds a little like Tori Amos. And there is still some nice riffing from Martin Barre as his blue roots show through the robot "Low ratio" vocals :-)

Shurely they didn't forget Mi Sex?

Some shady 'related videos' on this one.

  • johnno,

Does your Mum like Bailter Space? If so, try Velox in Newtown, currently being run by John Halvorsen.

And, not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but I think this year's WOW is a little bit weaker than in the past. Personally, I never really got in to the costumes, but the dance and musical interludes were often stunning. Favourite memories have to be the Royal New Zealand Ballet performers 2 years ago. That was a real wow for me.

  • B Jones,

Maria Pia's is my restaurant of choice to take mums. It's special as all get-out, but with a lovely homey atmosphere. They do a good set lunch menu, main and dessert and a glass of wine for $25 last time I checked. It's near Old St Paul's.

Does your Mum like Bailter Space?

That's a ridiculous question, quite frankly.

  • George Darroch,

I fully expected John Key to announce the opening of NewZealandTown at the end, it was that bad. Four was funny though.

  • Andrew C,

Down in WLG last week and randomly tried both Floriditas and Scopa and liked them both, def in the not to flash, not to casual category.

I was just saying, I didn't think it was as bad as it could have been. But I was expecting something *monumentally terrible* as opposed to just sort of 'awww, douchebag'.

ETA If you can't bear to watch it all, in the last 15 seconds, the band is playing 'God Defend New Zealand' and making a fair job of it. Heh.

  • Andrew C,

If you go to Scopa, try the hot chocolate.

someone in there told me to, so i did, it was freakin awesome.

Speaking on hot choc, in case there's anyone in akl who hasn't tried it, make sure you check out the choc boutique in parnell road. You melt choc in a teapot thing and add cream and drink.

Whatever you do, wherever you decide to go in Wellington, bring a coat. Brrr-loody cold!

No-one's mentioned Fidel's yet? I haven't been for a while, but it used to be worth it just for the hash browns. Floriditas is also good, but I'm afraid I can't recommend Duke Carvells.

I thought Key did okay. He doesn't write the material.......

i didn't think it was too bad. gooberish, yes.

but could you imagine someone really dignified doing that ...? like, ooh, i don't know, helen clark?

Last time I was back in WN Fidels was a disappointment. Maybe it's just my rose-tinted nostalgia, but when I used to go there in my school lunchtime the coffee was consistently amongst the best around... now, not so much. I think Havana beans are still pretty good, so it must be the baristas. Kids now days, jeez.

Mind you, kudos to them and Midnight Espresso for resisting the urge to redecorate.

I thought in his non-scripted bits he sounded a little bit like he was begging/desperate to have tourists to come over. Anyone else get this vibe?

Wellington is actually quite a good town to live in. If you own a good reasonably warm windproof coat. Then you're fine.

I really despise Letterman. It's just not a funny show. Not even close.

I'd rather Key had declined to be honest :)

I know, I live here. I'm just saying that it's cold today.

Don't they call this "keeping on message" in politics?

I hear from reliable sources that his old show on NBC was very funny. And at least he's not Leno, who is a reliable Sucker of Funny from any room. Blah.

I wish we got Conan. I love Conan so much.

Another vote here for sweet mothers. :o)
Went to cheeky pipi a week ago, not bad! Very good value for your buck (had a sunday night roast which came with a complimentary glass of wine or tuatara beer).
